| I am still at that stage, where having done only around 100 dives, I try to get in to the water whenever possible, and that includes the sea and puddles, and I enjoy all the dives i do. All trainees in our club follow the usual path of pool/Leybourne/guildy or stony then Bovisand and it seems to work. Last weekends conditions where not great but the would be OD's did great, so the puddle dives certainly helped. With Leybourne only 10 minutes down the road it is very convenient to grab the kit and jump in for some training. I was able to build up on my skills by diving in the sea and having to deal with currents and surges, but was glad that my initial skills were taught in calmer and safer conditions. All said and done i have done roughly two thirds of my dives in the sea and have had some fantastic dives yet a highlight will always be going under at stony and actually seeing fish for the very first time ![]()

People drift away from diving. There doesn't seem to be any particular pattern to it. Once you stop, I think it's quite easy not to start again. Jason

| TBH we always do quarries first, sea after. I can do three 45 min dives in Vobster with students, without looking at a tide table. We do though stop doing quarries the moment the training is done. So quarries = training to me, but if people just want to do puddles, fine. One thing that does concern me (and this is not a pop at this group BTW), is well meaning individuals attempting training. It's one thing to mentor an existing diver, it's another to start to teach. That's a very thin line, which is very easy to cross. Experinced divers can share experinces and that's good, but if you want to teach, become an Instructor. Big difference. Last edited by TerryH : 25-05-07 at 04:39 PM. |

Terry I agree there is a thin line, but when Gav and I went to Vobster to dive with Garf, we did just that have a dive. Developing skills while diving with someone with better skills is an excellent way to "learn" however what you are saying is that no ocean diver should dive with a dive leader. I developed my curiosity by going along to watch a fundies course (only two of the days) I wasn't being taught anything. |
