| AFAIAC it's a non issue. So long as someone is good in the water then it's less important to me who or how they trained ..... less so nowadays, but in the past it was quite likely me who trained them You might need to spend some time to explain your config .... but I think you'd do that anyway .... so you are no worse off than you would have been prior to getting DIR Training. I think it realistic to know your own boundaries too....it's different diving with non-DIR trained people so you can't expect the same responses to things and if that bothers you then I would look at why I needed to do the dive. On my most challenging dives I would rather dive with people who have trained the way I have, though. HTH Mal |

| Depends on the diving that you are doing. I have just spent 2 weeks in Dahab with 12 Ocean Divers progressing to Sports Diver and I was the only one a single wing, BP and long hose. The instructors were happy that I dived this way (as my choice) as long as I explained how the kit worked and how a OOA situation was going to be dealt with. CBLs and Alternate Air Ascents were performed as per BSAC guidelines except I wasn't in a BCD. We were limited to a maximum of 30m, dive time of 45mins and no deco obligations (which is hard to achieve in a single AL80 with 32% anyway!) Doing a serious deco dive (more than 15mins) without the same configuration would be a different game as the risks get larger and I would need to sit down with the buddy and talk through all of the options and failure points. One thing that I would not compromise on would be gas choices though as this makes the deco much harder to do and the team ethos starts to breakdown. If extra kit is needed then it is taken. HTH

With non DIR buddies I just go diving, the more serious the dive the more I would prefer to do it with a GUE/DIR trained team. It's a matter of negating risk as much as possible. On simple dives the risk is lower, so I just go out and have some fun. Redundancy is always provided by your buddy, that's true in all buddy orientated dive practices, I don't know of any agency that recommends solo diving as being the preferred method.
