As the backup is on the left post (prone to roll off) then you just had a reg stolen out of your mouth by a diver who needed it in a hurry. So you have just exhaled. Now get the panicking diver out of your way and stick your backup in. And nothing. Here are your choices at this point - breathe off the reg clipped to your chest, or reach back and turn on the valve. You don't know whether the reg has failed closed because the valve is off, so to make life last a bit longer you go for the primary reg you were breathing off a minute ago. But it's tied using unbreakable line to your chest.
done this one - as a drill

Diver 1 Swap to deco gas.
Diver 2 goes OOG
Diver 1 donates deco gas
Diver 1 swaps to backup reg
no gas for Diver 1 - post rolled off
Diver 1 goes OOG to diver 3
Diver 1 indicates problem with left post
Diver 2 or 3 turns it on
Diver 1 hands back deco reg and goes to backup reg

You're still not thinking about team resources, and this is the DIR forum. It's not about "how do I resolve the problem", its about how does the team sort itself out.

Not really a big drama. Other things we tried - simply reach back and turn on the reg. Also reach back and turn on the reg whilst purging the clipped off long hose to see if thats an option. You have less options in a team of 2 than a 3, but even so given that each dive should be able to comfortably switch on and off any valve they have, you have quite a bit of spare gas in the team on any dive.

Digger,

I think you're picking the worng argument here. Think about it.

You have three divers, all breathing deco gas. One diver's deco gas fails. He then has the option of going for:

1) His backup reg
2) His own long hose
3) No.2's deco gas
4) No.3's deco gas

Even if you think he's a muppet and he can't reach his own long hose reg in it's clipped off position then he still has plenty of option.

The only time that your way makes sense is if:
1) He's a muppet and he suddenly and unexpectedly runs out of deco gas
2) His left post has rolled off
3) His buddies left post has also rolled off
4) His other buddies left post has also rolled off
5) None of them can reach their clipped off long hoses.

And all of this has happened without them becoming aware of the roll offs.

I don't think it's going to happen.

Janos

Garf,

I know this is a drill, but in real life would the OOG diver go for the backup rather than asking a team mate for their reg?

A good cave knot will do the trick, but a blob of superglue holds them all tight and secure. Even better, go to a chandlery shop and get some of the thick paint used for sealing the ends of frayed rope (not sure what it is called). That stuff will permenantly secure any knot.

If I suggested youd go to your backup I buggered it up. You'd always go to the team mate. If you ARE actually OOG then switching to your backup reg aint gonna help if you have a manifolded twinset, whereas you KNOW the one in your team mate's mouth is working. You can sort out the regs after you are all safely breathing again. If it's NOT an OOG, just something thats been f**ked up, then theres no drama, whatever is off can be switched back on and we sort the regs out appropriately.
