I can get out of my kit fast without a clip, so why put one on there, when it will inevitably fail sooner or later. It's not a massive problem if it does fail, but it's one I just don't need to live with.

I'm also too stupid to learn all about the indivdiual kit configurations, attachments, clips, etc of every diver on the boat and remember all of this shit in an emergency. Even in the midst of stress I can remember where my knife is and cut anyone's kit off them in about 10 seconds (and have drilled this repeatedly with a diver in old webbing. So they might as well not bother with clips either, cos I won't be looking for them

having done 400 dives with the same single break harness mine must be very lucky then, as "sooner or later" it will inevitably fail

:shakes head and walks off in wonder at how lucky I am:

as this is the DIR forum, you must remember that the people diving in the DIR fashion have little choice, they either comply or dont

There is a lot to be said for this approach, DIR or not. When you look at the huge array of different BCD jackets out there and the huge variety of clips it quickly becomes apparant that clips are not the easy option (Do I push the sides of this one or push the centre (Seaquest type). Where are all the clips? Have I undeone them all? Oh bugger, the jacket isnt comming off, missed that clip.....). Despite buddy checks as said, are you really going to remember all this configuration for every diver on the boat?

In an emergency situation giving rescue breaths is paramount, searching about for clips and working out how to undo them isn't. Remembering where you have your knife if far easier IMHO.

If I were the casualty I certainly would not mind loosing my kit to a knife in order to save my life....

I'd like to think that there is no enforced compliance in the way you seem to be suggesting.

I think those involved in the education of the system would think that the system sells itself. It's been recognised many times that for each component of the system there may well be something that's individually better out there, but it's the bringing together of those components into a standardised system of kit and procedures which gives it its strength and why those of us that choose to dive that way, made the choice.

Diving DIR is a choice in itself

Edit Can we discuss the merits of hoglooping and ratio deco? We would then have done a "full set" and all within a Bank Holiday Weekend

having "been on" a Fundies course during harness set-up on Saturday, you seem to be under an illusion then

You? On a fundies class? You're sh*ttin me, right?

Did you just see the actual configuration part? or were you there during the Course Introduction where the students were encouraged to ask questions and were you there when the kit configuration was discussed.

I don't know whose class you were "on" but I am sure you only saw one facet.

I was there from the start and during the full config part, all upto getting in the water, apparently no matter how good my harness set-up, if it was attached to a yellow box, I would fail

    ask Clare

I tried very hard with my one piece but I often got stuck in it and needed help to get out.

I did see a brilient design of back plate with rolers on the bottom that alowed the webbing to move freely. So as you pulled in the waste belt it tightened the harnes. If I could get hold of one of these Id give the onepiece another go.

Sadly my sexy one has been sent to the tried but failed pile of equipmnet

Personally I have never seen one fail. 20 years is a fair time and I've seen a lot of rigs with them. 'Later' could be longer that you or I will be willing to dive.

Fair enough, I can't help the stupid
