Which is exactly what I said to the guys who had just completed their fundies course on Monday.

I am not sure what my PM conversations with Jamie have done to him

I hope not I didn't want a critique just reasons why people go DIR.

From what people are saying its not as mainstream as I thought.

Thanks for your replies its an interesting subject.

Can someone point me to a decent DIR web site please?

Best wishes.

Just sparked an interest Fiona - like I say some of the thinking interests me, especially the fitness aspect, the simplicity and uncluttered approach. I'm possibly too much of a maverick to ever be DIR myself though

The straight reality is that isn't true. I'm as critical as the next person, and have an eye for a hole in a plan before it gets started, but they're trying to do something that can only be described as as close to impossible as things get.

Believe me, in trying to get around 12 divers to agree to some simple procedures we were screwed, I have no idea how they have managed to get it to several hundred worldwide.

The power of the internet is what makes them seem much larger than they are, most of their members are computer literate, a great many discovered the system through the web, and a few promote it to the masses through the web as well. This is why reading websites like these it seems like they're taking over the world. Reality is they're not, but the numbers are growing, and growing quite quickly in the last couple of years.

Not DIR, but I can see a lot of advantages to having a decent system. If I was diving OC and diving caves, I'd want a tight knit team around me. DIR makes it possible to have a tight knit team fairly easily without having to train together with someone for months. And even after months you still end up disagreeing because you set the standards, not an agency or group of divers, which leaves it fairly open to bias and problems.

Digs.

Well, worth people knowing. Because underneath it all DIR divers aren't that bad. Certainly compared to Italians or Russian divers anyway
