    Manifold fixed or loose

GOT A QUESTION HOW DO YOU HAVE YOUR MANIFOLD...FIXED OR MOVEABLE? I HAVE HEARD SOME SAY (1) FIXED, I.E. IF IT GETS KNOCKED IT MIGHT BEND BUT SHOULDNT LEAK! NO CHANCE OF O RING MOVING THEREFORE LEAKING . (2) SOME SAY MOVEABLE AS IF HIT IT WILL MOVE BUT NOT BREAK. ON MY MANIFOLD THERE ARE TWO SMALL GREEN O RINGS ON EITHER SIDE OF MANIFOLD KNOB!

General principle says loose, due to risk of breakage if impacted.

Now personally I would have thought that if you hit something hard enough to break a centre peice, I'd be more worried about the fact that my head is probably now near (if not up) my ar*e and will my long hose reach that far.

    Your view may differ

I have mine fixed: I want my isolator to be where I last left it.

I think the arguments for having it loose are a bit thin and even so, I don't go scootering around in caves.

I have mine loose. I don't generally go scootering around inside caves but I've scootered into my fair share of wrecks and the impact can be *hard*. Loose makes a lot of sense to me (and yes I have moved it through impact on a few occassions).

    pros and cons

Id appreciate some pros and cons not the professional career types though lmao Just wondering what the benefits and disadvantages are from having it loose as against fixed so if anyone can elaborate a bit more it would be helpful to me. I can then make my own judgement on the factors given

OK - I have mine loose because if I hit anything I tend to really whack it. I want the manifold to move and not break. I want the give in the manifold to absorb the energy of the impact rather than bending it.

I have rolled a fully loaded set of 12's off of the back of a 4X4 and the manifold moved but did not break. If it was fixed in place I suspect that the manifold would not have survived.

erm . . . can somebody conform that a manifold, with 200bar pushing against it, can actually be moved?

My regs don't seem to want to move much

    ColinM

    EDIT:
Ah, I see from above that if it's dropped from a height it might move

Yes. If the twinset's properly set-up there should be a fair amount of play and it will move quite easily.
