i know but how do you do the skills, if fundies are the basis for the skills development of DIR, do they suddenly drop all these skills and change just for the RB80?

Nope, the skills are still valid and still work once you're on an RB80 - but fundies is an OC only course.

I think Clare or Al or both put a post in here somewhere of their RB80 course and how it fits in with the GUE system and diving with OC GUE trained divers. Or it may have been on DIRX

Here you go

GUE RB80 training

so you can do all the DIR skills with a rebreather then?

so in effect theres nothing to stop someone learning all the fundies skills on an RB and theoretically being able to pass a fundies course. After all the fundies is a refinement of pre-existing skill sets not an open water course.

I think part of the pre-requisites are you must be tech or cave 2 or possibly both, im sure someone more experianced than me will be along to say the right things.

This is nearly 5 posts on the trot with no slagging off differant agencies, somethings not quite right

i'm just trying to get to the nuts an bolts of the thinking. If they are soooo dangerous then why teach them at all, why add in a level of danger at point at which the diver will be taking these into an extreme environment.

Or do all those who've got RB80's then proceed to return to the 'normal' depths and gain experience on these units before attempting 'big' dives. So why not teach it earlier and let the diver learn the unit as he learns the diving. Better for the diver to learn with the unit than feel an undue pressure to return to the diving they've been doing before and come unstuck at a point where the maximum danger exists.

From talking to someone trained on the RB80 by Reinhard Buchaly (the RB in RB80) a few years ago, it's not so much that they're inherently more dangerous than any other SCR, it's seems to be more a fact that they weren't ever meant to be a commercial thing. More for exploration grade work really.

AFAICS the ones who do get them, do the same as most RB divers, they get their hours/skills up at shallower dives and don't go 97,000 feet into a cave on dive 3.

Which is what Al and Clare are doing now from what Al said last time we spoke.

Just a wild stab in the dark here, but I'd have to guess it was becuase he was being an obnoxious tw@t?

The DIR forums are not somewhere you can just start flinging shit at other divers just becuase it says DIR on the door. GUE training does not weed out idiots, or gve them the right to mouth off without a reaction from the very people they have a go at.
