Standards are a vital element of DIR. Standard kit configuration, standard gases, standard procedures, etc.

If you start to deviate from that then you start to lose the point of it all and move away from the DIR methodology to a more general rec/tech approach.

If you don't want the standardisation aspect that DIR brings then there are other perfectly good courses that accommodate a far more flexible approach. If, however, you do want to take a DIR course then I'm afraid you need to be prepared to accept the constraints and requirements of the course.

and to be fair to you, I think that used to happen a lot. these days, even the official fundies course does a hell of a lot more "this is why..." and the get-togethers we organise are completely around the "why".
