    DIR approval !

Have been looking through interest at what kit is ok for use by DIR divers!
The gear already accepted is some of the best available, i dont think that any honest diver DIR or not would argue with that!.
But who makes new gear DIR or not.
EG: apeks tek three! good and solid! DS4 but handed!
    Genuine enquiry.
Not DIR myself. but guilty as lots are of adopting a few methods and kit formation!
    Thanks.

    Hi Ruffy,

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but there is no "formal" approval process. It just has to meet certain criteria. For example, a regulator should not be of an upstream design.

Thats easy if it's got an over the top price tag and some good lettering then it's passed

Kit is good, but it's not all flawless.
Even staples like the DS4 wasnt designed to be horizontal,
    so there are compromises.

No you're right. It doesn't give as much gas when it's in a horizontal plane.

I think its to do with the fact that gravity assistes the action of the piston in the first stage. If you swim around in a vertical orientation then it's easier to breathe.

But the ds4 s still being used by many divers in the uk (including me) in cold dives lasting long periods and performing flawlessly. Some Halcyon kit is questionable coming from someone very excited by DIR!!!!! My stage rig halcyon has rusted after only a few dives and now looks over used????

A lot of the Halcyon kit though (most of it) is bullet proof!! Absolutely gorgeous BP's!!!!!!!!!!!

Back to the main point when using DS4's I now thanks to Howard put them at a slight angle as can cup my head in the triangle formed by the first stages and manifold valve. It is really comfortable and is much more upright as was your concern........

What is the reason for the slightly less gas supply when at an angle??????????
