| Imported post ROFL.. I can't believe this has gotten three pages of topic.... First off, it was a bit of fun on a skills day in Capernwray, the only use that we could think of was to enable practising of dsmb deployment, we happened to mention what we'd done while having a coffee with Phil which has now led to this thread... why people are trying to analyse it is beyond me... Obviously if launching a blob in open water specifically to be seen by the skipper then the blob needs to be full at the surface.... This wouldn't be the time or the place to try practising.. (Do people really think this is whats happening? Why only a spool?.... Well I've only done it with a spool and cannot see how this could be done with a reel because the technique used was to reach up the line with my left hand and pull down, then keeping the line taught between my left hand and right hand I then spooled the line onto the reel like you would cotton onto a cotton bob (does that make sense?) then reach back and repeat the process, all of the time keeping a slight head down position while slowly finning. I think trying to reel in the line using the handle on the reel would be virtually impossible, you would need to take up some slack but both hands would be needed for the reel alone... someone might have done it though so please feel free to correct me. I did it first time I tried but only after watching my buddy do it, I wasn't wearing gloves at the time and the string was starting to hurt like hell so I was relieved to get the bag down and emptied, I think it would be fairly easy with gloves on unless the gloves made it more difficult to manhandle the spool.. dunno I'm also not overweighted, I've spent a while getting a nicely balanced rig that can be swum to the surface with no air in either the suit or wing and can hold stops at 3m with 30bar.... I carry no weight whatsoever in freshwater but add a small V-weight for salt.. So anyway, try it if you feel like it but lets not be trying to look too deeply into it, it's a pretty useless skill unless you fancy a bit of DSMB practise YBB: I promise if I ever dive off your boat I'll be fully erect.... Oooher! |
