| I am interested to know how you go about deploying a dSMB from a spool rather than a reel without ending up with a birds nest. I have not ever tried, but notice many DIR divers carry a spool as a back up to a main reel. Also, can you use a homemade spool (i.e an old reel barrel) or have the dedicated ones got anything special about them. Paul

| Imported post Dont know, iv seen plenty of arguments myself regarding this matter. i just posted a link to the film. I have a reel that is my main and a spool for back up in case I let go or some other problem occurs. Im going to sit back and watch you nice people discuss. Jamie. |

| Imported post Thanks for those Jamie, very good viewing! With the bag deployment, It looks like there is very little air going in - to the point he seems to be able to hold station mid water while holding onto the bag. Any ideas if the video is taken from very deep or is there less worry about the bag being "erect" on the surface than getting it up safely? What is used to inflate the bag too? Is it a harness mounted air gun? The detail is not quite good enough to see what is being used. Paul

| Imported post From a relatively novice divers point of view. The video made sense once I had watched it twice, and realised that what the diver cliped onto his wing at the start and then used to wind/secure the line to the spool was a bolt snap. Simon A |

| Imported post Paul before I ever did any training with an smb I had seen this video and read on here and other forums how to safly deploy an smb. I can now as far as im concerned safly inflate one. i also only fill it enough to get it on its way. Im normally deep enough so that the air will expand enough so that once on the surface it will be fully inflated. My old buddy had a self inflating type, he also used to only put enough air in to get it on its way up. I normally inflate my one by using the bubbles from my exaust on my reg im breathing. Iv done this over several dives and not had no worries. Im sure other people do things slightly different. It makes me cringe when I see people inflate one almost full and rise several meters before they actually let the thing go Simon yes I belive it is a bolt snap, this also stops the line coming undone in your pocket. I find it a bit of a pain as it does sometimes unclip hth Jamie |

| Imported post I believe DIR doesn't see the need for a fully-inflated SMB, as they use those closed-circuit ones... You re-wind it by holding the spool on one side, clipping a bolt snap onto the line, and then using the bolt snap to wind the line back onto the spool. Then if you want to lock it off, you clip it to one of the holes in the spool. I think. I use a large reel myself. The spool lives in a pocket for emergencies

| Imported post Dominic do you find that there is to much line and it stops you from making the bolt snap fit through nicely? is it just a case of removing some line? Im being stupid arnt I? Jamie |
