DIR: Discuss Poseidon regs and DIR in the Technical and Specialist Diving Forums forums: Hi Guys, Still haven't tried the cyclon swopping thing underwater. Stuart-Apeks and Scubapro IP's are so close that they work ...

Imported post Hi Adam, there is nothing that there that doesn't apply to Cyklones too. They can be used in all situations, an Apeks 2nd stage works fine with the 1st stage, I don't really understand the point you're making. Most of the arguments made against them apply only to the Jetstream. I don't swap between different sets of regs for o/w and cave diving with backmounts (though I do for sidemounts) -- why would you have to?

Imported post Wasn't there something about the Cyklon being a massive breach of rule 6 - coz it looks like a shower head stuck in your gob?? I'll get my coat... Fraser.

Cyclons are the de facto reg for UK cave diving and you'll have the piss taken out of rotten if you dive with anything else - we can be just as DIR too you know! Duncan

Imported post Hi guys, Before I get drawn into another I do it this way it must be right type arguement. My post was in the DIR forum, explaining why DIR divers do not use Poseidon regulators. I was not trying to start any arguement or ruck-just explain. I went out of my way to say that this was my opinion as a DIR diver-not why everyone should not use Cyclons. What has resulted again is some people attempting to "prove" why DIR is wrong. Not the point really! I am well aware that UK cave divers use cylcons-for a variety of reasons I'm sure (but it is not my area of expertise) but one of which I beleive is that if you are using side mounts, the regs need not to be "handed" so you can route the hose off the left hand bottle straight, rather than needing to wrap it behind your head. A regards to having the piss taken out of me-thats fine! Stuart has pointed out, you can indeed attach other second stages to Cylcon hoses and vica versa. If you do they bubble- but do work. You can even attach any second stage to a Cyclon 300 unbalanced first (on which the IP varies with tank pressure) and it will probably work in some fashion.Yes, you can dissasemble a cyclon underwater- by removing circlips etc. Yes, it is perfectly possible to outfit an entire team with one type of regulator, but one of the advantages of DIR is that due to it's standardisation, you can travel and dive with other divers and know that their equipment will be compatible with yours. OK, we could issue cyclons to every DIR diver worldwide! However, there are plenty of other regs out there that allow you to do these things without bubbling or other drawbacks. The line of thought is not whether cyclons will do it or not-but in terms of if I have a choice, which should I chose. There exist any number of regs that will give you as good a performance as Cyclons under bad conditions, but without unique second stage fittings, possible non-compatible IP's, sleeves that seize and bend the pivot pin etc. etc. I am not having a go a cyclons, cyclon users, CDG members or anyone else. In a challenging environment if I had to chose any available regulator to use, given the above, no I would not! Hey but thats me. To be truthful, DIR does not favour any particular brand-most people currently use Apeks or Scubapro-but that is just based on what is currently available. For a long time, the WKPP used some Oceanic regs-which were fine as well! As long as the regs are compatible with other divers, second stages can be stripped easily Stuart-my point about changing regs was that in your earlier post you say that you use Apeks regs "on your open water bottles"-I infered that this meant you changed regs, sorry if I misunderstood. I repeat, I'm not setting out to win any arguements, or persuade the world to ditch their cyclons and become DIR! All the best Adam
