Might be able to get an idea of whether its worth even visiting the diving doc by phoning them first. If you go to the medical forum on here, the link to the UKSDMC (and list of all the medical referees) is at the top of the page somewhere. Try calling one, see what they say.

Many thanks for all the responses.
I hadn't thought of ringing a dive doc scuby: top idea

I may have to settle for surface cover: I'll be on the deck, in the sun with a good book, you lot can go and get cold and wet

I do have a history of fainting but that is linked to the low blood pressure and anemia, I was really bad when preggers but okay now 3 weeks out of 4

Sooty Stoo will have to wait for the sprogs to get old enough if he wants a family dive.

Smile Disabled Diver (cant beat em join em )

Hi I am a disabled Diver, I have had alot of ops on my spine, got alot of steel in my back, I also have had a total knee replacement in the last 2 years and my knee has gone again so need another op on my knee.
I have had medicals to Dive and been told I can, the carrying of weight is not important, you can put your scuba kit on in the water then the weight doesnt matter, what does matter is for you to take a medical for your own safety but also the safety of other Divers, there has been times when I so wanted to Dive but had to step back and look at the whole picture, and think am I fit enough to Dive without risk to my self or anyone else, please dont give up Diving is great but there are no short cuts, there are loads of Divers I know who are disabled and very good Divers alot better then me, So I hope you get your wish to Dive lots of luck.

regards Fred

Try calling the diving doc at Murrayfield on the Wirrall. They'll give you some advice on the phone and help you decide if it's worth pursuing it to the next stage of a medical.

For your own safty I would see a dive doc, there will be one nr you. My wife (Diving Dancer) is disabled but dives, she has back problems + other things and it really does make sence to get the green light first.

When we dive I either kit her up in the water or very close and drop her stright in, she tends not to do longer than 30 min as she gets tired but lves fish.

Feel free to page her for a chat she works in the legal field and is quite well up on all things disability wise, and if you cant find a good Dive doc we can put you in touch with our GP who is an HSE dive doc and could see you if you can get over to East Yorkshire.

I think you might find a lot of divers willing to help you into the water for a try dive. I live in Sussex and would willing to help. But you will need to help yourself first and get the ok from your doctor they would know if you need to see someone more specialized.

Any of the diving clubs near you would also help if someone asked them ?

I bet we could get you in the water before Christmas :-)

David
