I reckon being landed with someone who couldn't take of themselves and I didn't know without warning would be very unwanted and I probably wouldn't dive with them.
However helping someone you know and being prepared for it, well thats just down to whether you want to assist or not. Someone I know asks for help in advance I would help no problem in every case except if I thought it was dangerous.
In your situation knowing you were struggling and being a usual partner I wouldn't have a problem helping you ,especially if its only short term........
