I was just questioning the validity of divers breathing O2 "just because they feel like it..."

In my case, I wasn't really down long enough to get bent. There was a problem with the dump valve on my dry suit, which meant that it wouldn't auto dump. I was literally down long enough to get to depth and back up again...

I was more worried about the potential lung injuries I could have sustained.

sorry mate it was off Dave's post not yours.

If the boat was licenced for 10 people i.e. 5 individual budyy pairs, would there be enough space on an all day out trip for an additional 5 02 cylinders lugged on-board by each buddy pair. Doesnt it make more logical sense to have one, provided by the skipper, in a known location rather than 5 seperate ones and the possible ruck over using one that wasnt your own?

Tom have to agree mate, any sign of a bend and I'm on the 02, bugger the embarrasement.

As for not paying for the dive and/or the 02 supplied, what's that all about.

Matt

i understand were your coming skipper ,in this age covering your arse with someone else
making the decision is common sense.
i can tell you here that a call to the coast guard with the words "diver" and "02" will end up in 9 times out of 10 in an evacuation because they have to cover there arses.
i haven't got a problem with that but in the case of the guy i mentioned earlier who's just surfaced from a 16m dive for 18 mins had a bit of an uncontrolled ascent is calm showing no signs of DCS and is on 02 for 2hrs cos he obviously likes the stuff! do you think that warrants a 20k plus air vac?

i can remember a few years ago a local bsac club had a member choppered off from a local quarry for a fast ascent from 6m her max depth was 8m! surprise surprise nothing wrong with her .
back to your origional statment of it "would'nt happen to me because i inform the coastguard when i put someone on 02" isn,t really true cos if they didn't air vac you'd be stuck with him possibly looking for a second dive like the cheeky bugger i had.
cheers elfyn

I wouldn't go on a boat which didn't have O2, especially with one of my sons having suffered a bend while well inside deco limits. Fortunately, I haven't been on a boat for years (at least in this country) which didn't have O2.

As for divers liking to have O2, our club had one prat of a DO who ended up using the emergency oxygen to help sober up before diving. Glad to say that he is no longer with us.
