Switched from Excel to Royal Emperor
I'm one of a group of 7 noisy Irish guys who will be doing a Brothers Wreck Special out of Sharm during the final week of July.
Got a letter from TonyB yesterday saying that they have had operational problems with Excel recently and so we are being switched to the Royal Emperor (same itinerary).

I notice on other threads that people recently have said that Excel badly needed a refit/cleanup so it's probably a good thing we've switched boats.

Has anyone been on the Royal Emporer recently ? If so, any comments ? Who is the dive guide on the boat?

Looking forward to it. 3 of us will be bringing our Inspirations to the Red Sea for the first time.

Some of us were on RE last year, we were also switched but for different reasons as it was being run by Diving World.

If Albi Baba and Abdul are still the guides on this boat, I don't know if they are, but you will have a cracking time they are both great guys. Ali is deaf so you need to face him or tap him on the shoulder if you are talking to him, he will however swear like a trooper at you I think RE is also going for a refit as in October she is heading south to the Sudan.

I was out on Typhoon the week of the 8th May. The guides on there were saying the excel was being pulled from the lineup for a refit. To be honest it was starting to look well tired, and was really slow.( although i am sure the refit doe not mean it becomes a speedboat). We would watch it go in the morning, then watch it arrive at the afternoon dive site having overtaken it

I don't think Ali Baba is still on RE but check - you might be lucky.

The boat itself is quite small, not luxurious but comfortable enough and it looks pretty solid.

We had a good time on it anyway.

So when is the Excel out of the water & when will it return to service ?
Hi, does anyone know when the Excel will be:
a) out of the water
b) return to service

Also does anyone know what is to be included in the 'refurb' ??

If you go to the Tony Backhurst site www.scuba.co.uk and look at the schedules for this year that should give you an indication. No idea what the refit will involve, probably tarting up and painting.
