    Scilly Isles Information Wanted

My branch is considering a summer trip to the Scillies (mid-August 2007). I would appreciate any information regarding:

    dive boat charters
    liveaboards
members' experiences (e.g. quality of diving)
any other relevant information (like can we keep both 'wreckies' and marine life watchers happy?)

There doesn't seem to be a great deal on t'internet.

    Paul,

I think you will be very lucky to book something in the scillies at this stage.

    Options are very limited.

Jo & Tim Allsop run charter boats through Scilly diving - great diving in the beautiful Isles of Scilly Great skippers and reasonably priced. I would be amazed if they have anything available at this short notice though. I believe someone else runs a RIB but I don't know their contact details I'm afraid.

Mike Rowley on Maureen of dart runs liveaboard trips. I believe someone runs a liveaboard out of Falmouth but no idea who it is.

    Diving is superb

You'll find some trip reports here

    Hope that helps

I know Fred Buckingham's boat 'Pamela P' goes to the Scillies quite often out of Penzance.

I just take my tent on my RHIB and go wherever

Last time we were down there, I heard that another guy who used to run dive trips from St. Marys had started up again, can't remember his name though.

The diving is fantastic, great wrecks (Cita, King Cadwellan, Plympton and Hather to name but a few), also some really old stuff (Assocciation Fleet) and lots of pretty pretty stuff too. There's always chance to get a dive and if you go with Tim or Jo, their knowledge of the area is tremendous. We've been about 4 times and are going next year too, in fact my buddy got married there a couple of years ago.

I did a weeks liveaboard to the Scillies on Maureen of Dart

    I do recommend them

I did a three day liveaboard in Plymouth with a boat that also does the Scillies, I don't recommend them
If you want to know why - drop me a note and I'll let you know

I did the Scilly Isles this year with my club, we used Jim Heslin (01720 422595) sundowner@btconnect.com
Was an excellent week, camping and 2 dives a day, Jim knows all the wrecks and places to dive and the seals were fantastic.

You wont go far wrong with Jim, He knows the wreck sites like the back of his hands.

diving the wrecks himself from the early seventies.

First dived with Jim in 1979, Yep old fart?

The wrecks are well broken up.

Should you dive the Cita then you may find my finger tip by the front bow locker but I dont need it any more?

I went with my old club in August 05. We had a great week with fantastic weather, just one or possibly two days of rain. We were on Jo Allsop's boat Moonshadow. As onthetrain has said, you might find it hard to book a space now. When we were there she had taken lots of bookings for 2006, and had even had some people tentatively reserve weeks in 2007.

Even if there is space on either her boat or her dad's boat, you might have a problem getting hold of decent (or not so decent) accommodation. Our trip was organised over a year in advance. If you manage to book a self catering cottage, then you are given first refusal on the same place for the same week the following year.

I would love to go back. The diving is fantastic - the vis was great and we had a mixture of wreck and scenic diving.

Good luck and hope you make it over there. Looking forward to reading your trip report....

    Josie
