How long can a bend take to show symptoms?

Just curious how long it can take for a bend to show any symptoms. Say 2 shallow dives <10m with somewhat saw tooth profiles. Fine for a few days after, then wake up with a throbbing pain in the shoulder. No diving or physical activity since the 2 dives.

A few days? Unlikely, but not impossible. Most show up in the first hour or so, most of the rest in 24 hours.

However, if you have no other good reason to explain the pain, heavy lifting etc. then it is best to make a phone call to the diving docs for a chat.

Don't let YD influence your mind. Make the call. there is no possible consequence of making the call which is worse than the possible consequences of not making it. As soon as you suspect the possibility that there may be a chance of a question of a bend, phone someone who knows what they are talking about.

and for the record, last time I was in the hit, symptoms didn't appear for about 24 hours.

    I'd not rule it out.

A couple of weeks ago a diver did a few shallow dives <10m and a 12m dive over 2 days. She was fine the next day but the following day had a pain in the arm which was still there on the 4th day. On the 5th a localised rash was visible and as they were due to fly the next day she made a call. Advice was to get it checked out and into the pot she went. Once pressurised her pain vanished and after treatment it never returned. The dives were mild and there was no reason but it happened.

The fact you have posted suggests you think it a possibility. Therefore, rather than taking advice from a bunch of people on the Internet I suggest you call the diving doctor and let them advise you. There is a 24hour diver advice number in Poole or you can call your local chamber as they will have a free 24 hour advice line.

Having given the advice to the lady on holiday I took my own advice and made that call last Friday, 4 days after a dive, and feel better for it!

when i went to the chamber it was nearly 48 hours after i left the water

always worth making that call tell the doc your symptoms and let him/her

make the call if its worth a follow up .

A mate of mine had quite a serious bend a couple of days after a dive. Bad enough that he was temporarily paralysed and gave up diving because of it. Symptom free from the end of the dive to waking up on the sunday morning unable to move his legs.

It's not a difficult call to make - make it.

I was on a RIB, max 35m Dive. Good profile, well hydrated, no "Events" apart from it being a bit choppy on the way back in. That was the Sunday.

The Following Tuesday I had a pain in the Shoulder. By Friday it was pretty bad. Saturday morning and I was screaming for opiates!! Saw local GP who diagnosed torn muscle and gave pain killers.

Went Diving Monday (bend day +8) and the pain went at depth. Uh oh. .....

Still unsure, I waited till Wednesday to make the call. Long discussions followed, I went up and went in the pot. Initially the pain went but then after an initial 7 1/2 hour potting it was back and the next 90 min potting made no difference at all.

So, the general consensus is that there was not a bend but a rotator cuff injury caused by the rough ride back in the RIB.

The Consequences of making the call? A fantastic service by LDC, an unbelievable Thai Meal (in the Pot), great over night accommodation and everyone only too pleased to have seen me if only to rule "out" a bend.

If you are posting here asking the questions you should really be making the call. Trust me, you cannot regret it.

A diver had a couple of events on the Saturday of a trip I'd organised. She elected not to dive the next couple of days, and on the Tuesday evening called me to ask if she might be bent, as she'd developed a pain in one of her elbows. I said that it was unlikely but possible, and gave her several numbers to call. I strongly suggested that she call for a second opinion. She didn't call that evening, but when she woke up unable to walk to following morning she did call. She had seven treatments and was able to return to diving.

It was a lesson to me - she called me more than 72 hours after her dives so I'd asked her to make the call, principally as an arse-covering exercise. I was very glad I had. She'd said she'd not been sympomatic before the call, but I'm not sure how long she'd been in denial.

As has been said - make the call.

    Rhys,
Any update? Did you call them?
Assuming you are at home your local advice centre is probably Rugby Decompression chamber / Hyperbaric chamber for divers with the bends / decompression illness, Midlands Recompression & Hyperbaric facilities - The Midlands Diving Chamber
