Are you sure? Last time I had DAN insurance certification was no restriction on depth limit. It's one of the reasons I took it as IANTD Trimix cert is restricted to 90m. Basically, it covered you to whatever depth or mix.

D.a.n.

Mrs. Reef Hook (A.K.A. Drama Queen on the other site that cannot be mentioned! ) and I both use D.A.N. purely for the diving cover, having an annual travel policy to cover other requirements.I understand (maybe incorrectly) that D.A.N. do not have depth limitation irrespective of certification. This is important since we all know how easy it is to drop maybe a metre or two bellow a given depth, which, should that be your certified maximum invalidates all (to my knowledge) other policies.Equaly concerning should you claim on other policies they could invalidate if you are within your certification limit but had exceeded it on a previous dive.

I was wrong in earlier post, just took a look at: https://www.daneurope.org/eng/terms_of_insurance.pdf

Key limits are:
  • Trimix/Heliox > 50mtr & not exceeding 130mtr
  • ppO2 not greater than 1.4
  • ppN2 not greater than 3.95
  • relevant local laws & regulations are respected (???)
  • Dives > 130m required prior written authorisation for each dive
What if you use Trimix @ 45mtr? Think it goes on to say Normoxic Trimix < 50mtr covered if used to minimize narcosis. And I think rebreaters are covered. Gets very legalize & confusing....

Exclusions: ...state of acute alcoholic intoxication..."

Dan

I don't know about the rebreathers, but the depth bit is correct. I have just checked my policy document.

I chose DAN because of what is effectively a no depth limit statement for diver using air. If I end up exceeding 1.4ppO2 on air I would be in deep brown stuff.

It is also very reassuring when diving abroad, a quick flash of qualification card, log book and my DAN card, and its "certainly sir that will do nicely."

Another thing to throw in the ring is that the DAN policy is actually based on Italian law, the policy document in English is only a translation. The policy actually says that if you have questions regarding the policy you should check the original Italian! So, if the sh!t hits the fan and you end up in a legal wrangle would you need a solicitor expert in Italian law?

Also, and as I'm not an insurance expert, does anyone know the implications of the Financial Services Act coming into force on 14th January 2005? Will DAN insurance be legal to be sold/purchased/valid in the UK?

TG

My girlfriend & I are switching from the DAN Master Plan (Any gas, any depth) to the DAN-Europe eqiv. as it is.

The only thing which concered us a little was the max ppO2 of 1.4.

Although in these dangerous times some people may be worried about some of the exclusions:
Accidents arrising from nuclear transformation or energy settlement, natural or provoked, and by acceleration of atomic particles.

Not sure it applies, but then again I'm no expert either! DAN doesn't sell insurance as such, but rather you pay a membership fee and get insurance cover as a benefit! (Could be b*llocks!) Bit like insurance cover I get thru my BSAC membership.

Doesn't DAN in effect buy insurance on behalf of its members?

Over to YD experts for comments...

Jonathan
