Running with significant weight on your back CAN'T be good for your back and knees in the long term??
Can you imagine the look on the coroner's face as he writes up the report on you falling down the stairs with 2 HP cylinders strapped to your back?
So use an empty set. The whole idea is to strengthen your body and condition yourself to the weight. If you do too much too soon you will hurt yourself, but the human body can carry heavy loads, just ask any serving infantry soldier. And how hard an impact can you have on the stairs, probably not as bad when the rope tying your twins to the bench snaps and they start bouncing around all over the deck.

I'll second that warning - I've got two worn out discs in my lower back and have to be extremely careful how I move and lift. No way I could manage a twinset, 12l and a pony is painful enough. I use a trolley to move all the gear around.

Don't think your back is indestructible - I did and now I'm paying the price. As I said in another thread, prevention is better than cure.

A certain Mark Powell asked me to pick up his twins yesterday 'cos he had hurt his back at the weekend, did my back a treat picking them up for him and thought I wouldn't be able to finish the course.
But I did .
