Interesting, it's definitely like that in bike racing, I know some people who win championships and do bugger all to look after themselves. I just thought diving might be more taxing somehow....

Well the main issue is that the younger generation of YDers to not give the 'Elders' the respect they deserve.

E.g. carrying twinsets etc, buying beers after diving, first pick of the choccies on the boat, reserved car parking space nearest to the boat and so on.

it's an interesting question, when i was thinking about taking up diving i was worried about my fitness level. When i went to capernwray to talk about training i was amazed by the err... errr... "various shapes and sizes" that divers come in and promptly forgot about my own fitness worries ;-)

The second thing that struck me was just how popular a sport diving is :-)

Stan Waterman (The Deep, Blue Water White Death etc) will be 84 in a month or so, and dives all over the world. Leni Reifenstahl learned to dive in her eighties but twenty years later she was dead! If you can make it up a flight of stairs you are probably fit enough!

Don't think you will be confused by doing BSAC training and also reading PADI books, I have done both - get stuck in.
