Hi Jamie
I am not a diving doctor, but I am a doctor, and the first thing that I would say is that if you had an RTA in 2002 and had acute renal failure then, if you still have it then you have chronic renal failure now mate. We see quite a few acute renal failure patients and i have to say that they are usually pretty sick! I would suggest clarifying this with your Gp as he has provided this letter.

I echo the other replies - you should get checked out by a doc with hyperbaric training

good luck

I couldn't agree more - the letter you have makes no sense at all!!
Under the PADI system, in theory, all you need to do is get "any medical doctor" to certify you as fit. Under the club system (BSAC etc) you need to approach a doctor who is one of the medical referees for the UKSDMC. He will decide either by talking to you or after getting a report from your GP and/or a medical whether he is happy to certify you as medically fit to dive. I wish PADI would also direct anyone with a medical condition to a UKSDMC referee but for various reasons they won't/can't. However I believe if you contact PADI about a medical problem they often "suggest" you seek the advice of a medical referee.
In your particular case hypertensives can dive but they should have well controlled blood pressure, not have any complications of the condition and the medication they are on needs to be carefully considered as some is not advisable in divers. If you still have renal failure then this will need special consideration.
HTH and Good Luck
