Question diving and depression?

i got a call from an old friend the other week as he wants to do a few little bimbles but he's been on anti depsessants for a couple of months
he only wants to go shallow no more tham 10m and to be honest i dont want to take him any more than that,
so my quisgen is about the drugs he's on and he's state of mind
he's using (CIPRALEX-EFCSITALOPRAM) try saying that when your pissed!
is it wise to dive with him or is there any issuse with this type of drug?
any advice?
kindest regards john routley

I know someone who is doing trimix rebreather diving on anti-depressants, but dont know which ones. I wouldnt normally recommend it, but in his case it would depress him more not to dive so its seems a reasonable trade off and we both know the risks,

this is my problem with this, he loves his diving and it's the thing that keeps him happy and would do him good to get out there and have a go, im shore it would be good for his head but the drugs are a worry.

i'll see if i can get in touch with margrat clamp.....i know she knows he's dive history

I had a similar issue and Dr Clamp was very helpful. Emailed the drugs I was taking and why and followed up with a telephone discussion. The problem with some (but not all) antidepressants is that they have sedatory effects which leaves you at greater risk of narcosis. She told me flatly that I couldn't dive whilst I was still taking the medication. Needless to say, I came off it, as the desire to dive won in the end. Your friend might not be in a position to do this though. Definitely need to seek medical advice.

Good luck.

Little Fish.

I can tell you that every one reacts diffrently to these kind of drugs even if someone pops up and tells you I take them and I dive it may be diffrent for your freind. He is taking them for a reason but getting back to diving might be enough to make a him happy. If you think it could get out of hand take a back up buddy too.

john i know ur concerned about this sittuation and would say he needs to be aware of the dangers of diving on anti-depresants !!! as there is definate scope for side affects !!!

and a potential of a simple diving sittuation getting out of hand ??

did this diver say what depths he was willing to dive to ???

or have u given him depths that u would be happy going to with him ???

depression

I have had Major Clinical Depression and after long talks with the Doctor I was allowed to resume diving.

The main problem is a 'panic attack' they strike quickly and can occur anytime so I have a self imposed dive depth.

I now know when a 'panic attack' is going to happen but I would not like to be at any great depth when one occurs, either for a dive buddy or myself.

What I did was to start with basic snorkeling and very gradualy work up from that but I still will not go deep enough to incur decompression stops and I still find a lot to see and do even at shallow depths....

(Depression= anger without enthusiasm)

i think the question here is the side effects of diving on the particular medication mentioned.

Diving with clinical depression is not ...in itself the issue.

If you have any questions about depression and diving that dont involve the medication issues then feel free to Pm or phone me
