Muscle strains

OK, not really dive related, in that I did it playing hockey or 3 hours on Saturday, but my muscles are tight as anything, and it hurts a bit getting up and down the stairs, and walking about a lot.

So, what's the best way of getting my muscles back to their supple and fresh form, ready for a day at work tomorrow and to get back out running this week hopefully! And I'm hoping ok for a gentle dive on Wed...

It's nothing serious, I get this every year when I start the season, but I could do with good ways of getting back in the fitness saddle for the year.

Oh, and I thikn a lumbar support is the key for next year as well!!!

And by the way, before anyone gets on their high horse, I spent half an hour warming up for the thing, and warming down, it seems to just be a case of my muscles aren't used to this sort of thing. One game they can deal with, 3 they can't. But I'm a boy who just doesn't know how to say no.

TIA

Digs.

I'd have to say COLD! A cold shower jet or the good old frozen peas. The cold should be applied not on the actual inflamation but proximal (ie towards the cetre line of the body). That way blood is cooled as it flows towards the inflamed area and the swelling, and therefore pain, is reduced. My osteopath told me about this and it works a treat on my current injuries.

A soak in the bath with detol added.

Was recomened it by an ex para and was very sceptical but it realy dose work!

Only problem I have is my sholders are too broad to fit in most baths so I end up with a seperate injury from trying to squees in the bath!

Fin
Ps should not be a problem for you as your size is in the stomac!

Ibuprofen/nurofen is a muscle relaxant and anti-inflamatory - that should do for a starters, and some light exercise to loosen the muscles up again - swimming is the best all rounder.

I can't believe it, a sensible answer from me

IMHO almost correct .... I would alter the hot to warm ... as I understand it, a hot bath will only send the blood racing to the skins surface to cool off, when you really want the blood moving through the muscles to disperse the lactic acid.

Applying something cold initially is useful to help minimise swelling, but in the longer term warmth is the way forward.

Deep heat cream or linament may stink to high heaven, but they do a far better job than the spray when a joint/muscle is stiff and needs a little help to loosen up.

When I had that problem (after running 13 miles) I found lying on the sofa with occasional limping around worked best Although that did take a couple of days to get better
