Are you Bent.

As the response to the new "I learned " forum has shown a few incedents that required recompression, and given that all dives are considered to be compression dives, do the panel think that there may be a far higher incedence where divers are suffering mild symptoms but choose to ignore, almost accepting that slight niggles are part of the outcome of diving , and only seeking advice when confronted with more serious pain, visual ,or neurological signs.Hope this is discussed in the same frame as the" I learned" forum without blame . I posted in the medical so as not to wander off topic elswhere , but admins feel free to move if not appropriate to here.

I can only use my own experience in that even though deep down I knew I was bent, denial still would not let me accept it until others made that decision for me.

I for one go into the water in pain and come out of it the same I guess the trick is deciphering if the pain is dive related, and that is the problem as the medical advice is anything out of the ordinary experienced should be investigated.

Safe diving,
Steve

I am sure that happens quite a lot. An ache in the shoulder put down to carrying the kit, a slight rash put down to a rubbing suit. I haven't been bent (that I know of) but from what I have read, denial comes into it a lot.

I actually think there is a fair amount of denial in the diving community. As said, a rash is put down to suit rubbing, a pain in your arms or legs down to carrying equipment....

I personally am almost over cautious, very aware of the symptoms and react to them. I have visited the chamber for a medical following diving and it taught me a lot...

My advice is, it is not cool it is not hard to ignore what you essentially believe could be the bends. I know that it is a pain if you are diagnosed and therefore can not dive for some time, but in the end of the day, you only live the once, and why be a fool about it...

Just my opinion

This is partly why I posed the question, because I do gym work plus have a few sport related injurys that can be aggravated by the pre dive lift & load, I think that maybe there are times when the muscle/joint pain could be aggravated by the dive, but how do you know . Can't see it being practical to cry wolf too many times (if your an old git , and paranoid) Thanks for the input folks.

I'm sure the Hypabaric bods would rather assess and treat or discharge you early, than come to them days after when more treatments would be required with a reduced chance of full recovery.

Safe diving,
Steve

Yes , I can see the validity in the early treatment, but as you say yourself, if you have pain before and pain after how can you tell?.

That's the £64,000, personally I reckon anything you come out with that you didn't go in with, get in touch with the RN on call Doctor.

Safe diving,

Bent

If you have been diving, no matter the depth, and you have an unexpected ache or rash get it checked out. A couple of hours inconvenience is far better than a lifetime of discomfort.

One issue is that having a "mild" skin bend that can be treated by using oxygen at the surface, ignores the fact that there may be other symptoms.

You also need to understand that a dive computer uses a gas model and is not a guarantee you won't get bent. You can do slow ascents, do your stops, and still end up bent.

Yep, totally agree , but as the origional post said do you think that maybe in the past you had a niggle etc that you ignored, not denial , just that you thought that no way was it a bend?,or was it!.
