I wouldn't think that you needed one until you have finished the course. You need one to work but the way I see it your not working as a DM, you're training as a DM. The medical is annual and if it takes three or six months to complete the DM course then you've wasted a good chunk of that time by by having a medical too early. On the other hand you may be completing the DM course in a week or so.

I beg to differ - I'd say get your medical as soon as possible, then you can start working as a safety diver, if your school will have you. You only need to be Rescue diver or above with an HSE medical to work as a safety diver on courses. This really benefits your DM training as you can actually get working with 'real' students much earlier, and you learn so much more. Hope you enjoy the course: if you're doing it right, it should be enormously hard work and brilliant fun. alice

| I agree with Kanga. If your school is doing things right and you are the only diver in water with the students other than the Instructor you should have a HSE medical. This is because you are a part of the HSE dive team, also if they pay for your entry, food or even air fills you are being paid and are "at work". Enjoy the course though. Its probably the most rewarding of all and only beaten by giving your first certification as an Instructor |
