Another fed up diver

Yesterday I had laser surgery on a retinal tear, the tear happened spontaneously and now I have floaters and blurred vision. It appears that the jelly breakdown which caused it is age related and also due to being quite short sighted.

Only affects 1 in 30000 though so I am a bit unlucky.

Don't know whether this will be the end of my diving or not, I'm told not to lift anything heavy for the next few weeks but they want to monitor it in case the retina becomes detached.

It also seems that my other good eye has a number of weak areas on the retina too, so this may go the same way.

Anyone have any experience of this condition?

Lyv

And I've just bought a shiney new backplate and only fitted my webbing from Woz a few days ago. Not got it wet yet.

I hope you get sorted soon, my dad had detached retina and had it 'spot welded' on by laser. As far as I know, he had resumed normal sight and activities pretty soon after the op.

Lou

It would certainly be unwise to dive with an unstable retina. I was involved in some experiments looking at diving and retinal injury some years ago and it was an issue however retinal detachment surgery has become both more sophisticated and mainstream in recent years. I wouldn't sell your gear just yet but wait until your retina has been more thoroughly assessed. This site and helpline may be able to answer your questions.

I have lots of sympathy for you....any eye condition gets me worried....nearly neurotic about my eyes, when I was a teenager I had a cornea transplant done, one of the biggest worrys I have is something going wrong with my vision.....here's wishing you the best
