Thumbs up Noel in taking exercise shocker

I've decided that it's time for me to get a bit fitter as I have a sedentary job (I design diggers, not much exercise there really except the mouse hand and the brain) and I'm slowly building an impressive band of office lard, so a week ago I bought a new bike.

I did 10 miles on Sunday, the day after I bought the bike and managed to break off the sprocket guard when the chain came off, this is one of the things that was rectified by the Halfords boys, and the Shimano settings were not correct, again fixed. And I have to say I felt pretty good afterwards.

Last Friday I took advantage of an early finish and set off for the lanes around Burton, where I live, and got as far as Newton Solney before the clamp holding the handlebars had worked itself loose and the bike became un rideable- a long walk home ensued. Lesson number one, take tools with you.

Friday evening was taken up by BBQ and bike fixing so this morning at 7am it was time for the rematch!

I feel quite pleased with myself for doing another 10 miles this morning on some, for me at least, quite hilly sections. Please bear in mind that I have not ridden a bicycle properly for about 15 years so having a new 21 speed MTB is a bit of a novelty, so it's not surprising that I had to stop a couple of times, well slightly more than that, but I only pushed the bike twice and even then it wasn't very far.

    Bring on next week!

Added: I would have put this on the deepstop but I don't appear to be able to log in...

Well, I only managed half an hour tonight but most of it was XC... one section through a brook! I even interrupted a couple of teenagers shagging not in the brook I hasten to add.

I'm a bit the same; I used to drive my bike into Hobart everyday, park in the centre of town, near the railyards and ride to my job in the northern suburbs, 6kms each way on a bike track which runs next to the rail line. (ie flattish~ gentle incline). It was excellent and kept me in trim.

Now, I work 40Kms away and can't ride in, so bike exercise is w/e or evenings. Only trouble is, where I live, it's hilly as buggery, on the slopes of Mt wellington, so it's either cruising downhill, at great speed or else struggling uphill and pushing uphill. Very dispiriting.

My aim for routine stuff is to get one of those roller trainers in my garage and pedal away on that whilst watching TV, until I'm a fair bit fitter again.
    Doing It Richard

I have a few faults but being wrong isn't one of them.

    Just been out again

Well, I've just done another 15 miles on the bike and feel pretty good about life. One question though, why a motorists sometimes so impatient? I suppose I'm now seeing life from a different perspective. For instance this afternoon whilst going through Newton Solney I approached a junction where a red Fiesta was approaching at a fair lick, so I naturally slowed off for fear that he hadn't seen me - he then shouts at me "well f*****g pedal then"

    Tosser.

Oh well, the rest of it was fun though. One day I'll buck up the courage to do a bit more XC stuff. I did some at the start of the ride which was fun.

Good for you mate, for the last 7 months I have been going to the gym, forced initially by my GP.

I have lost about 2 1/2 stone and feel much fitter, and to prove it last year in Scapa when I wasn't diving or eating I was sleeping, this year I dived longer and deeper and was full of beans afterwards.

    Keep it up.

    Safe diving,
    Steve
