Anti-depressants

Hello, it's me again. Long time no see
Anyway, I want to get wet again, after a lay off of over a year And to do it right, I need a medical :| Sooo...

From what I've read on the internet diving and SSRIs are a bit of a grey area, there is no evidence of problems, but no one seems to have a definative answer. I need to book a medical, but I'd like to talk to a sympathetic one who will not dismiss this out of hand.

Does anyone have any experience in this area, and can anyone make any (printable) suggestions. I'm not prepared to stop taking the pills just yet though.

Thanks in advance

Beardy.

Hi Paul,

I dived on escitalopram with no problems - gas to 80m & fair amounts of deco. I asked my doc & a diving doc - they said no problems known.
Check for yourself obviously but if you're OK on the surface then just work yourself up gently so you're comfortable in yourself.

All the best
Lee

The UK Sport Diving Medical Committee updated their recommendations in 2004. You can find them at http://www.uksdmc.co.uk/standards/St...depression.htm
Their recomendation is basically that if your depression has been controlled that so long as you are only taking one anti depressant (SSRI or similar) that you should be OK to dive.

Good to hear that you are getting back to diving. I suspect that you have to consider the original need for the tablets, and as to wether that remains to a level that may be a problem in diving, for example anxiety attacks. Good luck.
