Diet beats his!

An acquaintance is going to Barbados (or somewhere equally Caribbean) and has said he previously has been turned down scuba training due to having diabetes. I assume the "whether or not" depends on the type/level of diabetes + a doctors opinion.

Could anyone point me to some relevant information.

I will have a Google search but I hoped to get some inside info from other sufferers.

Thanks in advance to all who reply.

Bryan

Everywhere I have been in the Carribean asks you to fill in the PADI disclaimer form which asks a lot of health questions - including one on diabetes I think. I suspect answering yes to any of the questions will rule you out of diving. It's an insurance and more than me jobs worth guv sort of thing.

I'd phone ahead and ask the operator in Barbados. I have used DivePro Barbados - Homepage in the past and thought that they were good.

Here you go:
UKSDMC medical standards- diabetes mellitus

I suspect he will need to have a medical prior to going.

cheers,
Paul

Taken from the BSAC website:

DIABETES & DIVING
Diabetes does not necessarily prevent a member from taking up diving, or for existing members continuing to dive if they contract the condition.
The UKSDMC have devised a specific process for diabetics to follow to determine their suitability for diving. There is a designated Medical Referee that deals with these enquiries and the 'Diabetes Pack' can be downloaded here:

I have to tick the yes box on the PADI cop-out form due to back surgery. So long as I can show evidence of a dive medical post surgery date I have never had a problem.

Just a case of passing the buck

Cheers, John

Hi i'm a PADI diabetic.
Get a medical before you go out and you should be ok.
I do one once a year and not had any problems with courses or resorts. when you tick the box you can say "i'm diabetic but i've got this form from the doctor"
Its the "i'll be ok so i won't tick the box" thats dangerous.

Indeed, for only £150 you too can have your pancreas destroyed, have to have a medical to go diving once a year, renew your driving license and learn how to cope with people saying "you can't do that you're diabetic"

at the end of the course you get a bit of plastic with a dolphin and a PADI logo on it :-)
