Medication is usually for ADD as Aspergers just makes you a bit literal, truthful but not likely to see the other persons point of view. It only starts to get debilitating at the Autism end. Aspergers also means we don't pick up on social clues too fast. Don't say "Did you shut the door?" if you mean "Go back and shut the door" as we will answer the question truthfully "No" which sounds like a refusal. I had to be taught to look at people when I was talking to them which can get a bit tiresome but they get freaky if you don't. It's almost impossible to insult somebody with Aspergers too. Call me a bad name and I assess it literally and normally rate you as an idiot as it's not possible. We do routines because we're ordered not because of obsessions.

We're both at the mild end and nobody has ever suggested medication, not that we'd touch it. We are normal. It's the rest of you freaks that are weird. Why don't you say what you mean and stop hearing things we don't say? We're both smart and learn quickly. If something catches our imagination we excel but we get bored quickly if you grind things out slowly. A good alternative name would be 'Engineers syndrome'.

Expect more problems from the ADD. Parents notice Aspergers but it's not really a problem unless you want it to be.
You pretty much described all of our engineering department. It's a nightmare trying to rewrite their technical sales brochures!

We design and build a thing.
    I write a technical description.
My brother translates it into sales speak.
We send it to the customer.
Management love it and pass it to engineering.
Engineering ring me up and ask what it really does.
I send them the original document.

Is it only me that sees 60% of this is fatuous?

Blimey, that sounds exactly like me...

    ...

I once taught a lad with Aspergers on some PADI Seals sessions. I found it quite awkward, as it was difficult for me to hold his attention for more than a few seconds at a time - especially for the "talking" bits. I think a lower teacher/student ratio would have helped - ideally 1:1.

My daughter was diagnosed with mild asbergers when she started primary school (she's now 15). The attention to detail and self discipline that went with it would certainly have helped had she been old enough to dive. It's hard to say but I wonder if ADHD might be helped by diving? Good luck.

30% of the population has some sort of learning disorder or other, which would translate to 30% of the diving population. It depends on what the severity of the behaviour is I guess. The kid's school should have some sort of learning support people that the parents can speak to.

My girlfriend teaches a post-grad on SLDD's so I end up getting just about every screening tested on me

My youngest has aspergers/adhd. He's now 15, and whilst his aspergers makes him quirky and fun,its not really a huge issue - though he is having to learn to read other people facial expressions academically rather than naturally.
However, his adhd, which he is prescribed concerta for,is more of an issue - he is easily distracted- an example recently is he managed to miss his flight at Inverness to his dads from inside the departure lounge, as he zoned out reading the paper (logan air were actually very good and sorted him out) Concerta is a form of amphetamine which stimulates the inhibitory complexes of the brain. His concentration span is not great whilst on concerta, and non-existant off it-which,given your young hopeful is on the maximum dose may well be the same.
I've taken Al under the local pier in about 3m of water, but I'd doubt he'd be safe underwater in a less predictable environment. Instead we've both taken up sea kayaking, which he both loves and is very good at and is ideal for someone like himself.
Kids with his combination of diagnoses can be very challenging, but hugely rewarding - and I'm lucky to be his mum
