I wouldn't have thought so. My eldest has Asperger's, they like routines and I would have thought scuba would be good for this. Mine doesn't take medication and is planning to dive in Honduras next year. Never even thought about a medical, I will now.

Ask the proper medics of course.

My son (9) has aspergers. He did his bubblemaker in egypt this year and was *spot* on. Part of the condition is an attention to detail. He could maintain a horizontal hover in 2M after 1hr in the water. I shit you not.

Einstein had it, Bill gates has it - it's not the biggy.

Mind you; my lads got it very mild and he doesn't take any medication - I suspect that'll be your biggest issue.

Aspergers. It all depends on the severity, I think you need to make sure that the lad is capable of understanding simple commands and can carry them out.
ADHD I don't know much about apart from the fact that tablets (Retalin) does work.
Try and accommodate the lad as best as you can without jeopardising safety. They aren't stupid just need that little extra help.
PM me if you want to

everyone displays aspergers in different ways its no biggy, just treat them as you would anyone else, at 14 he will have all the teen problems which may or may not be more of a problem than aspergers. A medical will just cover your insurance requirements , then just teach him to dive. I hope he gets on well.

Wouldn't think that would be an issue. People with the condition in early years will take everything you say literally. Don't use colloquialisms.

An aspergers afflicted person has yet to be diagnosed with average intelligence. They all have above average. Some, astonishingly so.

I would have thought the main issue would be with the medication which probably like lots of meds doesnt have any proven research as to what the affect of depth and pressure have.

With regards to the routine thing diving can be quite unsettling in this respect when plans change/ dives get cancelled due to weather etc but i'm sure this wont be a major problem so much as a bit of an extra challenge to deal with.

Aspergers through to Autism is a continuum and the name doesn't tell you much other than he's at the low end of the spectrum. My daughter has it and the Doctor that she was referred to and diagnosed her said I have it too.

Medication is usually for ADD as Aspergers just makes you a bit literal, truthful but not likely to see the other persons point of view. It only starts to get debilitating at the Autism end. Aspergers also means we don't pick up on social clues too fast. Don't say "Did you shut the door?" if you mean "Go back and shut the door" as we will answer the question truthfully "No" which sounds like a refusal. I had to be taught to look at people when I was talking to them which can get a bit tiresome but they get freaky if you don't. It's almost impossible to insult somebody with Aspergers too. Call me a bad name and I assess it literally and normally rate you as an idiot as it's not possible. We do routines because we're ordered not because of obsessions.

We're both at the mild end and nobody has ever suggested medication, not that we'd touch it. We are normal. It's the rest of you freaks that are weird. Why don't you say what you mean and stop hearing things we don't say? We're both smart and learn quickly. If something catches our imagination we excel but we get bored quickly if you grind things out slowly. A good alternative name would be 'Engineers syndrome'.

Expect more problems from the ADD. Parents notice Aspergers but it's not really a problem unless you want it to be.
