Plea for help = medical and diving related

Right I am wondered on a long shot if anyone can help?

I have a friend who is in hospital with a rare fungal / viral disease that is sitting on his lungs and slowly is causing him to die.

Basically his sats if he stands up fall down to 50% he has to be on 100% O2 all the time and in a semi vertical position – half way between sitting up and laying down – to keep his stats at about 90% - if they drop to 80 % he has a horrible coughing fit and disturbs everything in his lungs. His immune system is shot and he has been on deaths door a numerb of times - inc on life support.

He is convinced that it has come of air bags in his wings – cause he breathed off them just before he got all this – it started Sept last year and basically in Dec we were all prepared for his life support to be switched off but some how he has come through it all. Please don;t turn this into a thread of how or why - its too serious for that and i don't know his full set up arrangement but he thinks this is where it has come from.

He is back in hospital now and is on drugs which just seem to be sustaining him and not curing the disease at all = he has had biopsies done on both lungs and the hospital doesn’t have a fecking clue what it is.

They have said that there is only 4 weeks of funding left for the drugs which are costing £3000 a week to keep him comfortable – they are stopping his temperature going up to 38.5 and stopping his sweats and shaking that he has had for about 6 months.

He has given the diving equipment to the hospital for testing as when he breathed off them he said there was an earthy taste to them and hasn’t used them since – they tested the air but nothing – they are now refusing to swab the inside of them and he has asked us (being scientists) if we know of anywhere that can get the swabs done – he is willing to pay for this aswell.

He is living on borrowed time for sure and so far since being in hospital for 2 weeks has lost 30kg – and he can only drink high calorie drinks – he can’t eat anything.

The hospital doesn’t have a clue and tbh doesn’t seem to be doing much to help him – they have kinda resolved that he is going to just go to terminal care and that’s what is going to happen.

Does anyone know of anywhere that testing of this nature can be done?? We need it testing and identified.

We did think it could be histoplasmosis as he has worked with bats in the past and it has similar symptoms (Shadow on lungs, fungal infection, immune system shuts down, and it’s a respiratory infection) but apparently it has been queried before (months ago) and dismissed.

We don’t quite know what to do as if nothing is done he is going to loose his lfunding for his drugs and ultimately his life.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks in anticipation

That's the London School of Hygeine and Tropical Medicine.
I don't know if they do testing as that would generally be under the auspices of something like the Health Protection Agency, but they should know who would be conactable.

    Exclamation

There is also the LSTM - Liverpool School for Tropical Medicine
Been referred to them before with queries regarding medication from working in west africa.
They have a section on their website regarding sampling and identifying specimens from both NHS and Private hospitals -

Diagnostic Parasitology Laboratory - Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine

If you strongly suspect Histoplasmosis but it was queried once before, it is still worth getting it re-tested. A simple mistake in sampling before could be throwing people off considering it even if it makes the most sense.

Good luck for a positive outcome.
    Thoughts and best wishes.

    Hi Moya

Cross posting is generally frowned upon, but given the circumstances hopefully I'll be forgiven.

This was posted on a Rebreather Forum, there maybe some useful info/contact details in it

Infection possibly caused by my rebreather - Rebreather World

    The symptoms sound very similar.

    Good luck
