My wife and I took Malarone for 4 weeks in Borneo (that is the bit glowing bright red on the "Malaria Hot-Spots Map") and we had absolutely no ill effects at all. We might have been taking vitamin C tablets. Some of the other people we met that were on Larium had occasional problems.
Tell your company that if they want you to do an effective job out there they had better pay for the good stuff. You may not want to hand over all of your knowledge to them but at least you would not be suffering.
It is your call but I would rather pay for something that is going to do the job without messing with my head.
