Question Helium Balloons...
Ok, I was wandering and wondering around a 'party shop' earlier with helium filled balloons everywhere, bumping into my face... nice...

Whilst daydreaming about diving I wondered....

These balloons are filled with 100% helium (I'm assuming??)

So... How much He in a mix would you get away with and the balloon still be positively buoyant in air? Could you get away with some 18/45 or would you need something stronger?

If there's few enough impurities it might be some ready mixed back gas! Ooooooo

Balloon He contains atleast 21% O2 just in case silly kids (my daughter) breath it to get squeaky voices !

The BOC Safety Data Sheet just says that it contains Helium and Air....

However in the hazards....

Never deliberately inhale Balloon gas
Breathing 100% balloon gas will produce unconsciousness and death due to lack of oxygen

I've always been thoroughly under the impression that balloon gas had at least 16% O2 in it 'for the obvious reason', but during a recent visit to a big distributor of all sort of gases, the site manager swore blind that all the balloon gas they sold (and it was a lot) was pure, unadulterated He.
The really sad thing is that I was there to commission a brand new security system, so am horribly aware how difficult it is to steal any of those lovely pallet-loads of J's brimming with lovely 100% Helium that are dotted around the place.

Sigh.

It doesn't. It's air and helium, so it can't possibly contain 21% oxygen.
