there are 3 wings - travel wing 13kg and 16kg and tek of 22kg lift - there's been some threads last week on all of these - i think the tekwing should be fine for twin 12s and stages

We bought our Quantums a few months ago off Mark Powell - no issues with either of them as yet, and I see that some of the shops that had frozen their stocking of them have started selling them again too, so I would hope you are ok to buy them now.

Of course, I would getr them off a dealer i trusted to help me out if something did go wrong - just in case. A hint - this may not be the cheapest place

I have a ND cortex suit and absolutely hate it. Despite being roomy its restrictive in movement and i rarely have a dry dive. My next suit is going to be O3

a word about suunto gecko .... if you are thinking about diving deep or any deco remember that suunto use a very conservative algorythm for stops and dosnt cope with deep stops if you go down that route (the gecko will be adding further deco while you are on slow ascent or deep stop )
buy for the future of your diving ...and ask some good questions about computers before buying as its all too easy to buy an expensive piece of kit only to find that it dosnt support your diving style after a year or so

I think that maybe Apeks are getting there. They are a very good company and their after sales are excellent. However, the Suunto is pretty much the vanilla machine for divers world-wide. Its easy to sell secondhand and tried and tested. FWIW the Quantum seems more reliable if you don't use all its features. The problem is software from what I've seen (having 4 of them {warranty replacements all} before selling the last one on ebay in disgust..)

If you do buy an Apeks let us know how it goes. Its about time for a new thread on these machines to find out if they work OK now.

Chris

(PS I paid 180 quid for the Suunto [same as the Apeks] from Dive 90 in Cheltenham...)

New Divers, New Kit, Old hat!

I have to say as a regular at my local dive shop, I am sick and tired of individuals making out that the dive shops are our enemy, sure we can save a few quid online, but personally I like the fact that I can actually see and try on the gear before buying it, plus on the occasion my regs started playing silly buggers, I took them in and they sorted them out.

What really gets up my arse are the mupetts who think they are kit experts (and every clubs got one!) and 'give sound advice' to the clubs new divers about exactly what they should be diving with, christ! if the average bearded grumbly had their way, we'd all be head to toe black neoprene, twinsets for babacoombe, and the hideous abortion that are the early Buddy ABLJ's.

So, my advise is, YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON THAT HAS TO USE YOUR KIT, don't be a sheep! BUY WHAT YOU WANT and hey, here's an idea, why not have a chat with someone in a dive shop?! who deals with the items day in, day out, and not playing at bieng a proffesional. Besides all of this, think about it seriously, why would a dive centre sell you anything that might be bought back, they want you to be chuffed with it so you come back....not rocket science folks, and yes we will pay a little bit extra than online, but you're paying for their time to go through it with you, the fact you can try it, and you get a warrenty, and yes i'm a fan of my local shop.

Knowing what i've passed off to idiots on e-bay, I'll get my gear new

Bit odd resurrecting a thread from nearly six months ago with a rant apparently directed at people who offer advice. Agree that not all advice is well-founded, but surely asking for opinions is just as legitimate as going to the LDS - who will (probably) recommend the kit they sell
As with everything - DYOR!
(And is everyone who buys on ebay an idiot?? think not!)

I've been diving with my club for 20+ years and seen pepole like you come and go . us so called experts know our way around most dive kit better than some of the numpties acting as service engineers!
I can fix any reg with my adjustable spanners pliers and set of screwdrivers lets face it its only a few o rings and I can cover most sizes at my local auto parts shop slap on a bit of WD40 and there you go!
