I must have been over loading my car as its just cost me £600 (Rear Cross member bent which prematurly wore two bearings all had to be replaced) to pass the MOT and its less than 4yrs old!
Admitted its only a Small Saxo but i always folded the rear seats down got the weight as far forward as possible and didn't race it while it was fully loaded.
I have no idea how much all mine and my wifes kit weighs but it must be alot.
Ian

In all I would say some 80kg. The average weight of a person. I wouldn't consider weight as a factor but space for the kit and accesibility, for example if it has a tall boot.
Something like the Renault Kangoo can be useful, but personaly I wouldn't buy French. What is your price range?

Any car should be able to handle that load really. My 206 has happily taken enough kit for two divers for the weekend

Ian - Scarey, mines a citroen saxo 1.1 and my dad reckons I'm knackering the suspension with one lot of dive kit. Add to this that mum is paranoid about me driving 500 miles + on my own, mum wants me to get a "friend".

Chris, as little as possible!!!! Last car was ex demo and cost just over £5k

Yep Saxo 1.1 02 plate from new, I'm not 100% it was the dive gear that did it the only other times i've had it heavely loaded is when camping but that was only twice! this has diving gear in once or twice a month and its just coming up for its 74,000 mile service which is a big one as the cam belt has to be changed. So my wifes going to have it and i've just ordered a Fabia Estate nothing fancy but good economy and plenty of space but not to big.

Kath - i also do a hell of alot of driving on my own - best advice i can give is dont scrimp on the breakdown cover and insurance. learn a bit about your car (sorry if this is insulting or teaching u to suck eggs but so many women dont know how to change a tyre).

You ain't gonna see much change from 80 kilos, thats a 12.5 stone person, it shouldn't be overloaded.

If you had a car full of people, 5 belts, 5 people, it should still be able to carry 80kg of cargo. They have to be otherwise they would not meet the SVA regulations on the construction of vehicles.

p.s. If you want a friend
