The Thing Is I Have a Decent "Set of Lungs"...

Hallo All,

I'm getting tired of hiring kit that's either a) a bit manky or b) ill fitting.

I'm not it seems the standard shape or size for the kit I can hire (I am blessed with a "substanital" physique and a rather decent set of lungs!), thus I'm drawing up my wish list of kit to save for.

So, in your opinion if I'm looking to get a nice custom fit should I go to O'Three for a semi-dry and AP Valves for a Buddy Commando?

Oh and regulators, Apeks DS4 with ATX40 second stage? (Apeks seem to get a big thumbs up from a number of YDers)

Thanks for taking the time to read this rambling - realise loads of people post similar questions. I bought my fins on the recommendations of YDers and they are fab.

Cheers

Allie

Why not consider a backplate and wing, then everything is well away from your "ample lungs"

I have a set of TX50s on a DS4 and they are nice.

You say a 'large pair of lungs'?

Hmmm......imagination running wild.............no stop be sensible.

So you post at 12.01 am boasting about a large pair of lungs and expect a sensible answer???? no chance.

EDIT Dam, Dom actually posted a sensible answer.

Of a similar "interesting" physique, I've just got myself a maid to measure Otter dry suit and would second Doms sentiments.

The dry suit puts the "lungs" where they are supposed to be where as a semi/wet suit creates what Porg affectionately calls a "mono-boob"

I am now looking at a wing/backplate set up as the inflatable baldders that come around my sides are really bothering me.

Is the semi for UK diving becuase having not wanted to go down the dry suit route becuase I would need MTM I dived in a semi for 2 years in the UK and ended up bent. Diving Doc said I was almost hypothermic and therefore didn't off gas in my arms and legs properly.

PM if you want more info

Allie,

have you been down to Wittering Divers and had a chat with them? I know it's a shop, but when I lived that way, I found them to be pretty unbiased in their opinions on kit etc. Even if you go there just to try on some different drysuits (I got my Hunter from there...).

Allie,

I can recommend the DS4 & Atx40 combo as they're a nice breathe, reliable and cheap to maintain. But I think you need to try a few regs out and see what you like, personnally I only tried the Apeks and some Aqualung regs and I couldn't get on with the Aqualung ones at all.

As for bcds the Buddy ones have a reputation for being hardwearing (built like brick privvy) so it will last. But they're quite heavy, so beware if you plan on taking your kit on holiday abroad.

I intially bought a Scubapro glide 2000 2nd hand and after much faffing I then bought a single tank wing & backplate and found it much more comfortable (the glide is now relegated to pool use)...whatever bcd you go for, just make sure it fits.

HTH

Lend her to me

You need to be comfortable Allie. If you are not, you will be far less relaxed and forever adjusting kit. Get a made to measure if you can - you will reap dividends and enjoy your diving more.
