I never, never, ever forget to check my gauges every few minutes. Never ever.

Of course I've... erm...never.... erm.... forgotten to check them either

Lucky I (erm... I mean... My friend...) was on indie twins and a stage and was just coming up to 21m so had whole other 12L cylinder to switch to, or my 7L stage (which is what I did.)

Redundancy is sweet

Not quite.
Your gas consumption is what it is. Do not beat yourself up about it, just plan accordingly. If I dive with one YDer I know if we jump in with me on 15ltr, him on twin 12s we come out with similar pressure in our cylinders. He is a very competant diver, just has a relatively high gas consumption. Sometime we both dive on twins and buddy tops the twinset up between dives, or takes a stage.

Indeed, despite having a fab SAC myself, my dives are only as long as my buddy's air lasts. I perfectly accept that.

I choose to dive with the people I do because they are nice blokes, competent and safe divers, attentive buddies (that is, we always know where we are underwater i.e. right next to each other) and on the surface I enjoy their company.

No one should beat themselves up about their air consumption. I'd rather my buddy was breathing than not at all!

Last nights club night got me thinking and also the thread about diving quarry's my SAC is quite high being new to the sport etc and as most on here seem to dive twins i feel that i can't go on YD gigs in case i shorten someone else's dive and feel a muppet. Chatting to a few club members last night it became apparent that nobody dives twins or has any desire to do so in the club. How do i learn then do i just buy the stuff jump in and hope for the best or did you actually train with an agency etc I'm not thinking of doing it right now until i've got a bit more experience i was just looking at how i can progress my diving hopefully later this year as i'm trying to get in as many dives this year as i can.

Sorry i have come in very late on this thread so this has probably all been said already (I havent read it all)

1: Any YD gig you feel comfortable diving on is one your welcome on. I dive a CCR but I dived out of Dover this year with three people on single and pony rigs (one of them because he forgot his ccr )

Many twinset divers will do both dives on one twin set so effectivly they are diving a 15tre on deep dive one and a 9 ltr on shalow drift dive two.
Many single tank divers dive two single tank dives.

2: Personaly I prefer a twin set to a single IE twin7s over a single 15 or 12ltr. I prefer this as when i dive a single i take a pony. When i dive twins I dont have to.

3: I taught myself twins. I found the gradual progresion fun and interesting. Mistakes were made that cost money so be warned.

4: A twinset course with Mark Powel or similar quality instructor is a fast track and my suit you better.

ATB

It's a context thing, continuing a discussion from earlier in the thread and used another's figures to make the point. I agree with you, I have sucked the bollocks out of a set of regs at 15M. I mean dry. Like nil Frigging bar. I'll be trying to avoid that in the future

12KG of shot!!!!?!? What's your suit? A helium filled double bag constructed of two-ply neo at 12mm thick with balsa wood stiffening?
Wow, no wonder you complain about not be able to lift it!

Strange but true. I have done proper weight checks, and reducing the weight to 10kg makes me have almost no air in the suit-not comfy at all. FWIW I am 75kg and about 5'8". I use a weezle and a membrane suit. So I carry the shot separately on to the boat and fit to the harness in situ. I am very relaxed in the water, lovely SAC.
I may remove the polystyrene ankle weights at some time in the future

15ltr and pony requires 11kg of shot to get me down

He he. I did a dive today and realised afterwards I didn't look at my gauge all the way through. Curious. It's funny being back on OC, where the gas not the ppO2 is the problem

Oh, and it was lovely. Managed to nark the crap out of Woz. And a bit out of Bantam too

I think everyone sees the advantage of trimix now.

Yes, making mistakes and learning yourself almost can be expensive, it can also teach you a lot about equipment and rigging things. It can also do you in, so make sure you play with new ideas somewhere safe. Like Dover.

Digs.
