First Drysuit

eBay.co.uk: Otter Britannic Drysuit (item 190123571122 end time 25-Jun-07 20:00:00 BST).

Yes i know its blatant but if not your size i do appologise.

But helps to answer your question. Go for membrane, and a good quality one it will last eons.

Ive got one of these and think its the dogs doo dars after replacing my tea bag like northern diver neoprene suit, im now dry instead of covered in damp patches. Neoprene is warmer but i found thin layers under fourth element artics and im just as warm, plus with the membrane ive got alot more movement across the shoulders and it doesnt make my stomach look quite so big, this is about looking good isnt it???????

yeah well i am a bit of a porker... and i like the idea of increased movement in and out of the water offered by membrane... even when youve decided on a material, youve still got to decide what make - spose thats budget dependant anyway

Had a compressed neo - too restrictive. Went for a cordura suit - too restrictive. Got a MTM polyester trilaminate suit - splendid.

Dunno what your vital statistics are, but I've got a couple (!) of cordura membrane suits you'd be welcome to try if they'll fit. You'd need to either get to Portland, though, or meet me at Vobster and agree to dive with me for my trouble. Also have a (non-compressed) neo O3 you could try - all in manly sizes & cuts.

Definitely have a chat with your LDS, but the problem with trying stuff on in the shop is you don't get much of a feel of what it'll be like in the water. I hate my neoprene suit on land, but found it was a revelation in the water.

Hi Sea-M

I wrote a similar thread here a couple of months ago. I've always dived membrane. I'm a classic yo-yo when it comes to weight, fluctuating between 2 sizes.

My LDS were great. I've always dived membrane. But I'd convinced myself it was "cool" to go for neoprene, so that was that. I WANTED neoprene. Guess what I ordered? Yep, another membrane!

The reason? Well, it's more forgiving with my fluctuating weight. A lot more forgiving. I got weighted when I was at my heaviest, and I've lost about a 10pounds since having it fitted. It's not arrived yet, but the bonus for the one I went for was it has a waist band so I can tighten it a bit if I lose and loosen it if I put on! He said with neoprene IF you put on weight it may be too much of a squeeze if I decided to eat all the pies!!!!

My partner (now ex - so a round of aaahhhhhs please!?!!) also ordered a new membrane at the same time, and he'd previously dived a neoprene. He is on the larger size, so he felt the membrane was the better bet.

I also took the advise of someone from here and she concurred with my thoughts which was good enough for me!!! (thanks - you know who you are!)

Just remember it's all down to personal preference. What's good for one isn't necessarily good for another. A membrane with a good undersuit for our lovely cold water diving was my choice and I'm really happy with that decision. Just remember if you swap types you'll need start again with your buoyancy!

Safe diving, and I'm still at Vobster on the 30th so if you can get a buddy it'd great to see you there!

hi hogen - thanks for your comments - i reckon when the time is right, i may opt for a membrane suit, as it sounds like it will accomodate my more than ample frame and not be a problem if (sorry, when) i lose some weight.

as for the 30th - im waiting to see if my buddy is available, if not i may just pop down for a bacon sandwich anyway - as ill be in the area saturday mornings

Like they all said - the opinions are very much based on what you prefer as a person, and we could go round and round in circles with equally good reasons why a membrane may be better and visa versa...

However, my 2p worth - dived a ND Cortex first and hated it, freezing cold, felt like something within a shrink bag, buoyancy all over the place... hate hate hate... Now I am in a Waterproof Draco Compressed Neo and it is wonderful.. it is like diving in a wetsuit only dry.. so fitting, flexible and as for weights... did not actually add any weight from changing over...
