<font color='#810541'>a colleague of mine has recently got into diving, he's asked me if this is good gear / a good deal?

package deal for scuba gear

I'm not familiar with any of the items in the package .... I pointed him towards Dom's site, anyone got any opinions on this package I can pass on?

(BTW, he plans to dive overseas only, just done a PADI referral which I think means all of his pool stuff and lectures over here, will be doing open water in Oz .... lucky b#gger).

I haven't used any of the gear in this package (though I've read decent reviews of all it) but I have bought stuff from this shop before: they are absolutely excellent in terms of delivery speed, customer service etc. So even if the gear is crap they'll get it to him quickly

Seems ok if the 'puta is included, but I thought the advert &amp; pricing looked a little unclear and if it were me I'd be wanting to get on the dog &amp; bone to check before parting with any &quot;readies&quot;
There's plenty of other package deals which to me look equally good on prices

Sorry to play Devils advocate, but why is he buying now? Wouldn't it be better if he waits until he has qualified and experiments a bit with different configs etc ?

Well, Mares are a pretty good manufacturer, so there's probably nothing wrong with the stuff in terms of quality (After all, it's not a HUB )

I wouldn't buy a package deal myself as I like to choose exactly what I get, but then I'm the type of person that spent several months researching what components to build my next computer out of

He might well get an equally good deal if he went to the dive show and told the stall he wanted a complete set of gear - I know I did...

<font color='#810541'>I'm not sure - at one point he was dead set against buying anything except mask &amp; fins, I think as he reads more about diving he fancies triying it in the UK?

I suggested the dive show, I think he may be coming along there anyway.

Thanks for the responses, I've passed them on

Andy

Surely the best bet is to choose each item on its merits and make up your own pakcage.

Any dive centre worth its name should help a new or prospective diver to make these choices based on the diving they want to do.

The trouble with packages can be that they have an item you want to change or that doesn't suit you - a good dive centre will do &quot;pick and mix&quot; if you ask.

<font color='#348781'>I would advise against buying in Oz, i was over there at the tail end of last year and thought kit prices there were extortionate!

If you go to Oz via the states you get 64kg weight limit but it's a bitch of a journey.
