    Question Struggling with weight

No, not on the belt or waist (although both are heavier than I would like!). The problem is in my suitcase!

Can't get everything I need to dive and spend 2 weeks in Thailand within the 20kg allowance, so need to leave some kit behind.

What would you take on holiday as a minimum?

    Diving gear

    What would I leave... Clothes

(what are you currently trying to take and in which baggage (hold / hand)? People might be able to spot where you could do things differently as well as proposing what you could get away with not taking.)

    At the minute I have:

    In hold
Fins (I like to take these so I can do some snorkeling around the hotel)
Weightbelt with pouches (more comfortable and easier to loose weight)
Mask and snorkel (as with fins)
    Camera housing
    Log and computer

    In hand luggage
    Regs and torch
    Camera

    At home
    BCD
    Wetsuits

Even with that I'm about 3-4kg over, although GF's case is probably similarly under

Rub it in why don't you!

I take all my kit but cut back on clothes. I take mix & match trousers and tops for evening wear that can be worn at least twice each garment. I take two pairs of lightweight shoes/sandals that can be worn in the evening. My trusty Merrel sandals are worn every day and I usually travel in them. I also take two pairs of hard wearing shorts that don't show the muck and a few tops for kicking round during the day.

Pack your regs in your hand luggage along with camera, torch, reel etc to take weight out of your case.

Decant toiletries into samller bottles or buy when you get there. I always buy mozzie repellent in resort as it's generally better than the stuff you get here.

Remember to leave enough room in your case to bring me a nice prezzie back

    Couple of ideas...

    1. Check the 'extra bag' allowance, some flights have the option of 1 additional piece of sporting luggage (usually up to max of 12kg) for an additional £16/£20..

    2. Check hand luggage weight restrictions, i'm flying out to Gozo next week and there is no weight restriction on hand luggage "within reason.. i.e. should be able to place in overhead locker without assistance".. so i've stuffed all small heavy items regs and torch (salvo .. which is heavy!) in a little rucksack..

    3. Wear ALL of your clothes you want to take at once!!

    Hope that helps a bit..

I'd ditch the weightbelt and take the log/computer in my hand luggage.

Geez, you blokes have a nerve for calling us girlies - how come I can get two weeks worth of clothes and ALL my dive gear in my luggage for less than 20k?

What type of case do you have Adrian? Get yourself a cheap wheeled holdall from Argos if you haven't already - it makes a big difference.

Silly question but the weight belt pouches... These aren't the actual lead pouches are they?

The rest doesn't sound like an unreasonable amount of stuff and sounds pretty well distributed. :-/

    Good point!!..

My Oceanic dive bag is about 3 kg's empty, so if weight is an issue use a normal holiday wheely case..

    No lead in pouches!

Case is probably the biggest issue, as it's a large Animal 120L wheeled holdall and weighs about 5kg empty

Pretty sure I could get 40+ kg into it, although not much use in todays economy travel world.

Just checked Emirates and SCUBA gear within normal allowance

How much diving are you planning on doing? The diving and equipment hire was so cheap when I went this year I only took my computer. Granted it wasn't a diving holiday as such but I still got 14 dives in. I think one trip (two dives) worked out at £15 inc all equipment. If you're doing a night dive, hire a torch in resort. If you're concerend about the standard of euipment take your regs. When I went to Truk I took 3 sets of clothes, one to wear, one on standby and one in wash. To be honest you can pick up shorts and t-shirts in Thailand for pennies so wouldn't take your whole wardrobe.

    Have a good trip!

    cheers

    Nick
