You use a WHAT??

On my many wee jaunts all over the country, diving with a larger variety of clubs and people i have come to realise that certain areas have things that are just not done, and types of kit that are not used.

Some clubs like to use a snorkel religiously
Marys lot think that auto airs are the work of the devil
One yorkshire lot i dived with liked to put their suit feeds on before they donned their jackets/wings
Some people use lbs some use kg for lead
Some clubs all use split fins, some use jet fins.
Ankle weights are de rigeur or naff
Weight harnesses ditto

Any more strangeness you have noticed?

Knives
For some the fashion seems to be a small blade worn casually on the BCD, whilst others appear to insist on HUGE lord of the rings style weapons strapped to the calf (with the obligatory snorkel stuffed into the straps.

The thing that seems to be becoming the rage at this side of the pond are EMS (ambulance personnel ) shears and not a knife.

When I did my nitrox course, I did it with another club (can't remember where now), but over lunch, discussing our dives, it appeared from the conversations that they always descended the shot line, tied off to it and swam outwards. When the dive was finished, they followed their line back to the shot and ascended.
Just remember thinking that it didn't sound much like diving to me!
Regards, and dive safe
Martin

I know a club that does that but goes one better. They advise all their divers to buy a pistol grip torch and a McMahon reel, bolt them together and then reel off the shot. One buddy does the reeling and seeing where they are going, the other has to follow them.

I have no idea what happens if they get separated....

Sometimes this is necessary when you have to return to the shot to ascend especially in low viz or the wreck / site is a big un and you risk losing your whereabouts.

Have to fess up to this one. A few years ago we were air lifted from the Farnes, wife had a bit of a turn! Anyway we ended up in Wansbech Hospital and I can remember pacing about in A&E while they were admitting her and wondering why everyone was giving me such funny looks. I was still in my kit so thought maybe the dry suit was a bit whiffy, then looked down and noticed the dive knife still strapped to my leg - which was in vogue then. Had this been in London I would have probably had the same reaction as Crocodile Dundee in New York - You call that knife!!
