After 6 years & 400 dives on twins, I use the following setup..

    OMS 94Ib Dual bladder Wing
OMS IQ pack - with pockets
    OMS SS backplate
    Custom Divers slob knob

    This has been used on:
    twin 10's (Manifolded)
    twin 12's (Manifolded)
    twin 18's (Manifolded)
all with or without 1 or 2 stages - either 7's or 10's..

This setup is extremely versatile & can cater for any twinset - I don't bother using singles with it though, & the IQ pack is exceptionally comfortable.

    The only downside is cost...

Only 1 mention of a slob knob so far, are they that unpopular / unnecessary?

It depends on how you run your setup & if you can reach your valves.
I found it most useful with the twin 10's as they are shorter & fit lower on your back.
Again the cost of these I suspect puts off a lot of people...

In my opinion unnecessary and an additional failure point. some people find shut downs very difficult when they first move on to twins (me included) but with the right technique and correctly fitting kit most people can do them. Many of the tec instructors on here run twin set familiarisation course, which show you how to use the kit properly and give you the opportunity to try a range of kit configurations. I did one with Mark Powel last year and would highly recommended it

I used a slob knob for a while but once I started using stages the slob became hard to reach so I removed it and learned how to turn the know behind my head.
Having said that in winter diving wearing several layers I would struggle to reach the knob and should the need arise a buddy can be useful.

Euro 12s, Holycon manifold (waited a bit for MDE to arrive, have since decided that they're vapourware and wont ever exist) on dirzone steel backplate with 3.5kg P-weight.

It works. Im happy with it.

Frog Midnight & SS Backplate, OPH. Used with Euro cylinder 12's & 16's.

I used to use an OMS 100lb bungied wing but I now prefer the Frog - I personally find it's much nicer in the water.

I also used to dive with twin 12ltr/300bar which was not one of my brightest ideas as I was seriously overweighted with no additional weight. This set no longer exists as it has since been broken down into singles.

    twin faber 12`s
    MDE manifolded.
    cd bands (not the best)
cd twin bladder TDB wing (awsome comfort and adjustibility).
    cd halo.
    Ali backplate (for travelling)

I have two main points for you to consider.
    1) try as many different sets as you can reasonably do before you buy as they do vary on comfort and adjustibility.
    2) Spend some tim e with a tech instructor (even if you are not going full-on tekkie) so that you are made aware of the necessary skills. In my opinion, if you are wearing a twinset and it is properly rigged, you should be physically capable of a full shutdown. All a slob knob will do is isolate the cylinders.

But, as in all dive kit, you just need to be aware of the pros and cons and adjust it soat you are comfortable to dive and resolve any potential issues as they arrive.

    I hope this helps.
