Off topic but Ada reminds me of a sure fire way to keep your fingers from going cold.
Cut them off and keep them in the airing cupboard.
    They'll be right toasty there.

    Slap strap

    Hi Aqua
Have you put a slap strap on your mask? Makes life much easier. Rather than hacking your hood around why not persevere at slipping your fingers under the hood and easing it over the mask? The more flesh you leave open to the water, the colder you'll get.

Yup, buy it, then trim it to the size u want. Always seemed sensible to me, never had a problem. I want a hood mainly for the top of my head, my cheek etc are covered by the mask. I think it's pretty unlikely ur going to cut too much off, especially if u do it at home with no gloves on.

If you're continuing to use gloves and a borrowed hood in the meantime, however... I have grief getting my fingers under the edge of my hood when in thick gloves too and what I do is pinch the material of the hood just above my forehead. That usually pulls it free of the mask skirt at the top, and far enough out to get a finger under and do the rest.

I know a few people who prefer to pull the hood on over the mask, which certainly makes it far less like you'll have to deal with the mask coming off. Of course that doesn't help you with the drills it would save you from 90% of the times a mask does get knocked off (which in my experience seems to be mainly on entering the water).

You're having to do this as a 'skill' at the moment but in real life there is nothing wrong with getting your buddy to check that it is properly seated! They could even help!

OK, so in the long run you need to be able to do it yourself so it is good to practice and it gets easier with practice, BUT when you first start diving (and I'm still no expert!) gloves make your hands feel like a fist full of sausages! If you are struggling on a practice dive when you're still new to it all get a bit of help coz you have enough other things to deal with without fretting over that little bit..and it is difficult initially especially in cold water etc etc .(And ignore all the 'you must do it yourself or you'll die' folk!)

The 'pinch at the top' is a good tip!

You're allowed to wear a mask?

I wish somebody would tell a certain instructor on here - I took two - might as well have saved on luggage allowance and taken a second pair of pants for all the time it was on my face!
