interestingly none of these answers reflect any theft concern. as an aside has anyone ever enquired as to whether their 2K worth of kit sat in the car overnight is in anyway protected against theft?

Definitely.
If it's just on your general house insurance then you'll be limited. If you have specific dive kit insurance then you're more likely to be covered (including leaving overnight in a vehicle).
I bought kit insurance from Divemaster when I took a shed load of stuff abroad last year and average holiday insurance wasn't going to cut it.
IIRC correctly when I insured with DiveMaster gear in a car was only specifically covered when away from home and then only if no other suitable, lockable secure storage was available. So if you left it until the morning to unload and sort out after getting home late and someone had nicked it in the interim, you weren't covered.
Anyway, my kit is easy to identify, it's the stuff fixed with gaffer tape and nails.
The advantage of stupidity over intelligence is that stupidity has no limits.

Straws are optional but add to comic value.
I agree with Ian, best to just have rubbish tatty kit that no one wants to nick.
My nicer bits are marked with a dayglo orange pen from a craft shop that dries like rubber. No one wants stuff with Vonny written on it in bright orange.
