I have learnt a lot from YD by both following and participating in quite robust debates.

I think there's nothing wrong with holding strong views and arguing the case for them. When I was at college I used to have lively atheist / believer discussions with my mate Mat late into the night. Alcohol was normally involved. The discussions became heated, but never got personal, and we are still good friends. He is now a vicar btw. What I enjoyed about the discussions is that it made me question my own beliefs, and he questioned his faith and in the end it ended up stronger.

In the same way my debates on YD have made me question the way I dive, and I now feel that I have a coherent system that works for me both in terms of kit and non-kit stuff. (Although it's adapting slightly).

However I always try and debate the subject and not go take it to a personal level. I would quite happily dive with anyone I've had debate with, (within our respective limits obviously) and hope that this is reciprocated.

When things get so personal that people would be uncomfortable being on the boat / in the pub or excluded from trips then it's a problem.

So glad i am not the only one to have upset Vic

I have no issues with anyones chosen dive path or style, however direct insults to me have also only come from DIR wannabees, and i can live with that.

Although my chosen route and style gets a LOT of critisism from them on a regular basis. I have not resorted to threats or childish red blobs on any occasion that i can remember (i may have forgotten some when drunk though )

Personally i think maybe a better thought out name for their style of diving would not get up so many peoples noses so much but then who do we trace that little gem back to kind of sets the style

Edit = Jokeing

2p

At the end of the day this is an internet forum. It is for open discussion from which we can learn and where we pass on our experiences etc. I have learnt lots on this forum and have found it a mostly friendly, informative and entertaining place.

The problem is though that for us humans communication is 80% (or so!) visual, ie body language etc. Take away that as well as the audio, as on this forum, and there is a huge potential for misunderstading. A number of rucks I have watched develop on this board and others have developed purely due to communication breakdown and perceived slights and differences where none exist. This is obviously different to genuine personal attacks.

I have met a fairly large numbers of YD-ers in person now (and become mates with more than a few!) and without exception they have been at least a little different to my mental image of them. Mostly I've been pleasantly surprised. There is a big difference between any internet forum or group and the real world!

I find myself agreeing with Mark. Sometimes heated debate is necessary to really learn something in a discussion. To point and counterpoint reinforces why you believe one solution to a problem is better than another. Members should not be afraid to join these debates if they have something to contribute, DIR or not.

I enjoy these debates and view them as mostly good natured. I've always been able to smile and shake a members hand, and have not had problems diving with non DIR divers on trips. As with any diver who is not a regular buddy, plan and dive accordingly.

I'm finding lately that members are perhaps debating 'debates' and 'personalities' rather than diving. Weird .

All very well and good getting heated and a bit personal, so long as you are sure the other person can cope with that. Andy and I have gone at it here and elsewhere (Handbag) in a fairly robust manner, indeed even when we met I went at him in a robust manner. I hope I can take as good as I give with other board members, but we arent all the same and even react differently at different times. So a bit of give and take and an appreciation of the other persons feelings is all that is required. We share a common hobby, this isnt the House of Commons you know. It would be sad if people felt unhappy enough to either leave the board or not go on trips because it got out of hand on here, isnt that a bit like bullying someone, not something I would feel particularly proud of and I'd hope I could appologise to the other party either publicly or privately.

'ere we go again..
I changed my signature because I was told "it" was only one way to dive!
I agree... - safely, and enjoyably...
I have plagerised ideas from all types and aspects and training agencies involved in diving. I learn something on every dive.. usually "bloody stupid idea.." when trying something new...

I now have a system that suits me. I don't push it onto others unless asked... usually!!!

It doesn't have a name... suppose it could be BSACPADIIANTDTDIDIR et al...

I have now changed my signature to remove any upset or antagonism...

Once again, I agree with you Matt, if you are subsequently proven wrong over something, I wouldn't hesitate in admitting the fact, if you don't you look an even bigger k**b than you have already proved to be. On the other hand though, if you're defending something that you believe in and someone has sought to criticise then it can get quite passionate, doesn't mean you're being antogonistic though does it?
