Like, you recommended them - I had two for ages - and I really thought that it meant I had been in trouble twice (I was very proud) and then I found out it was that two people had actually taken notice of me and joined....(gutted) ha ha.....

Yup.

When someone signs up to YD, they can enter your name as someone who they heard about the board from. If they enter your name you get a referral.
