Question Additional weight for salt water diving

Evening all.

Just a general idea finding question really. I currently use 11.5 kg of lead shot for inland diving. I was wondering how much I might be looking at having to add for sea diving. I know everyone is different, but I am guessing that there is a rough percentage of weight that you have to add when you go into salt water.

Thanks all.

You definitely need more - you and your kit are more bouyant in saltwater than fresh.

I tend to add 2kg between fresh and salt, some add 3kg.

I was considering 2.5 Kg as its what I happen to have handily measure out in my extra pouch and my ankle weights
I'd better buy an extra kg though just in case, or attach my old spare 4 pound weight somewhere stable beforehand

Well I believe its supposed to be around 3% of the total weight of you+kit, which is where the 3kg comes from (average diver + kit = 100kg?). In practice, 2-3kg.

I believe the density of seawater is 1027 kg/m3 as oppossed to pure fresh water being 1000 kg/m3.

Therefore you will experience an upthrust of 1.027 times freshwater in seawater or an increase of 2.7%.

So if you are netral in freshwater and displace 100kg of water then you'll need an extra 2.7kg of weight in the sea..........or thereabouts.

Is this correct or is this the engineering thread again?

David.

Wink

2 > 3 kg is about right.
I have two belts one for sea one for fresh, but since useing a backplate and wing I just dive over weight when in fresh water (no weight belt)
Hope that helps mate.
