Stinger with usb to serial problems connecting to pc

Hi can anyone help me. I've had the Suunto Stinger for a while now but only recently got a new laptop which has no serial port on this. So i went out and bought a usb to serial adaptor installed the new software (SDM 2.3) and now just keep getting device not found when trying to search for the computer. I've tried everything that the Suunto web site has told me to do but this is just not helping. Can anyone please, please, please help me.

Cheers

Hiya,

This is the same setup as I have. Which Serial / USB convertor do you have? I got a Belkin one. Need to install drivers for it (probably... I do.) Would have either came on a disc with the convertor or a little trip to the manufacturers website should sort you out nicely!

I've had this problem before and never resolved it, in the end brought a new laptop with serial port.

The serial to USB converters are very dodgy stuff. You have to install the software that comes with it for starters and after that in my experience it's due to luck. Make sure you are choosing the right port.

Two weeks ago I had an experience at work where after two days we found the problem was due to these converters, two of the ones we tried did not work and they were new.

Thanks but have done all this already. Think i might try to find a computer with a serial port just to eliminate the usb - serial convertor.

You need to see which port the USB to Serial converter is using. Start, control panel, Administrative tools, computer management. Click on device manager and on the right you will see all your devices. Click on Ports to expand it and your converter should be listed there and it will tell you what com port it is using. If you need to change it then right click and select properties. On the port settings tab click on advanced. You can change your com port number there. The SDM prog can use ports 1 to 8. Just select the configured one in dive manager.

Hi
Thanks for the reply but have tried all this, still didn't have any luck until I got another Suunto tranfer unit, eliminated certain things and found it was just the cable that was faulty. Only took 4 hours to find that out!

Thanks to everyone who replied.

Which cable? The serial to USB or the dive puter cable? Glad it's sorted out. My next reccomendation was to go back to the 1.6 SDM version. I used the 2.3 but had many hassles with it, went back to the original.
